Chinook's Edge School Division

Chinook's Edge School Division Where Students Come First! Chinook’s Edge School Division is a community of people committed to students each and every day.

Chinook’s Edge provides public schooling for a broad area in Central Alberta, stretching from Carstairs in the south to Red Deer County in the north. Our Delburne and Elnora schools are located on our eastern boundaries, and Sylvan Lake, Sundre and Cremona are on the western boundary of our division. We are a large rural school division, with 43 schools and approximately 11,000 students. We have o

ver 600 teachers, 200 substitute teachers and 650 support staff. From the early learning opportunities we provide for our youngest students to our efforts to increase high school completion rates, students in Chinook’s Edge have every advantage. We believe the journey of lifelong learning begins young, and we help students embrace learning early for benefits that last a lifetime. Chinook's Edge is the school division where students come first!

We made this summer! Let's catch up with Didsbury High School grade 11 student Jaxon J.

Jaxon gained work experience at the Didsbury Library, a place he already knew well after volunteering there last summer and spending time as a regular at the library's D&D nights.

Jaxon helped organize and run programming for kids aged five to 12, with programming held three days a week. Tuesdays were for setup, and Wednesday through Friday he was responsible for a group of students. Programming was nearly full this summer, with about 40 kids a day, and the library expected 900 to 1,000 visits over the summer.

"Working with people is good experience, and I want a broad range of skills," Jaxon said. He added that the environment was his favourite part of the job, crediting the many good people he got to work alongside. His supervisor, Trish Murphy, made the experience even better. Jaxon described her as supportive and fun to work with.

Jaxon was the first official work experience student the library has hired, and staff are excited to bring on more students in the future. The library hires two students out of high school each year and is hiring again this fall.

This placement was made possible through Careers, a not-for-profit organization that partners with Chinook's Edge to guide youth into successful career pathways.

Did you know? Chinook's Edge School Division is launching a new Health Sciences Academy at Hugh Sutherland School, developed in partnership with the Cu***ng School of Medicine. Experiential learning is at the heart of this program: students will complete hands-on visits to the School of Medicine learning lab throughout the academic year, with in-person and virtual presentations from medical faculty along the way. Go Kodiaks!

Some of our administrative support staff are the first faces students, staff and visitors see at Chinook's Edge School Division schools. Others work behind the scenes, keeping the systems and details running that make a school function day to day. Before classes began, all of them gathered for training and professional development to sharpen their skills for the year ahead. Thank you in advance for helping make 2026-2027 a fantastic school year!

There's more to being a school librarian than managing books! As we prepare for a new school year, our librarians came together to plan for what's ahead. They reviewed new curriculum supports for teachers, trained on a new research tool for high school students, and set library-specific and Division-wide goals for the next three-year plan. Did your school librarian ever surprise you with how much they did behind the scenes?
