Where Students Come First! Chinook’s Edge School Division is a community of people committed to students each and every day.

Chinook’s Edge provides public schooling for a broad area in Central Alberta, stretching from Carstairs in the south to Red Deer County in the north. Our Delburne and Elnora schools are located on our eastern boundaries, and Sylvan Lake, Sundre and Cremona are on the western boundary of our division. We are a large rural school division, with 43 schools and approximately 11,000 students. We have over 600 teachers, 200 substitute teachers and 650 support staff. From the early learning opportunities we provide for our youngest students to our efforts to increase high school completion rates, students in Chinook’s Edge have every advantage. We believe the journey of lifelong learning begins young, and we help students embrace learning early for benefits that last a lifetime. We’re still throwing it back to the our students made this past summer! Let’s catch up with Sundre High School grade 11 student Cole R., who completed a Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) placement at Clear Rush Co.

Cole’s interest in the trades started in grade 9, when a take-your-kid-to-work day gave him his first look at the work. He enjoyed it then, and the placement let him go further. At Clear Rush Co., Cole got to experience both gasfitting and steamfitting/pipefitting.

“I really like the community in the workplace and the ability to be learning the hands-on work,” Cole said.

Cole plans to pursue apprenticeships in both gasfitting and steamfitting/pipefitting after high school, starting with gasfitting. He will continue in RAP for both trades in grade 12.

RAP allows high school students to begin apprenticeship training while completing their Alberta High School Diploma or Certificate of Achievement. Students gain paid, hands-on experience in a skilled trade while earning high school credits and logging hours toward their apprenticeship.

Chinook's Edge School Division (CESD) students earned a place at the Canada-Wide Science Fair last spring, including students from Cremona School, École Olds High School and Hugh Sutherland School. Among them, one student walked away with a national silver medal.

Hosted by Youth Science Canada at the Edmonton EXPO Centre, about 390 finalists presented 344 projects. We caught up with a few of our successful young scientists, and they had plenty to say.

Getting there took work. Students first moved through a series of school, local and regional fairs. Claire F., who was in Grade 10 at Cremona School when the fairs took place last school year, said the jump from the regional fair to nationals was a big one. The time in between meant upgrading the project, redesigning it and doing more research.

Eli B. was in Grade 7 at Cremona School when he won a silver medal at the national fair. He said the research paid off with the judges, and he thought showing a solution to a problem was a bonus when it came to judging. Claire said pointing out "how to solve your sources of error" showed you knew what you were talking about. You didn't have to get everything right on the first try.

For Kyla B. from Hugh Sutherland School, it was her first science fair. For her project, she extracted DNA from bananas using household items. She did the work on her own time, asked teachers for help and drew on what she learned in class. A biology lesson with Ms. Sadek inspired the idea.

"Her passion is natural," said Hugh Sutherland School principal Dean Neilson. "She was supported by teachers, but it was self-driven."

Chinook's Edge School Division (CESD) has built a teacher mentorship program that has become one of its signature strengths. Every teacher new to CESD starts at Teacher Orientation, and those early in their careers then move into the division's mentorship program.

For Rikki Matthews, who teaches Grade 6, the mentorship sessions leading into the school year took some of the pressure off. It is all about the basics: "show up as who you are with a good activity that links the outcome," Matthews said.

Matthews is in her second year with the program. At the mentorship sessions, she said, the new teachers shared their year plans, unit plans, big assignments and novel studies. "I have a ton of very useful stuff to go back to," she said.

Laura Marshall, starting her first full year teaching high school English, said the mentors and coaches were relatable. "Everybody was in this same spot as a new teacher, and they remember that time," Marshall said. For her, relationships come first. "If you have those relationships, everything else falls into place so much easier, because kids are willing to take risks with you and they trust you."

We’re flashing back to a summer filled with ! Let’s catch up with Olds Koinonia Christian School grade 11 student Emma L., whose work experience placement was a family affair.

Emma worked at Opalulu Products, a business near Olds where Opa, Oma, kids and grandkids all pitch in. Three generations work together, and Emma’s Opa, Ben, runs it. She has been part of the team since 2020. Her days this summer included packaging, laser etching, sanding and putting together orders.

“This job has helped me learn more about working with my hands. I connect with my Opa and cousins as we all do this together,” Emma said. “My favourite part about the job is the time I get to spend with my cousins doing this work.”

Ben started the business with family in mind. “The idea was to bring the family together with this business,” he said. “Emma has jumped in and isn’t afraid to try new things, like learning laser etching. She learned quickly and has done lots of it. Emma is very productive, and as she gets better, her productivity has gone up a lot.”

Emma has a few ideas for her future, including becoming a writer, opening a cat café or working as a marine biologist. She sent a big thank you to Ben for the opportunity.

We’re flashing back to a summer filled with ! Let’s catch up with Hugh Sutherland School grade 12 student Parker H., who spent his work experience placement with Clark Builders.

Parker’s days were hands-on. He stripped and moved materials, then banded them so the crane could pick them up and carry them where they were needed.

Parker worked with Clark Builders with his future in mind. He saw that a placement there could lead to an apprenticeship in carpentry, and the chance to work on big projects appealed to him. Learning on those projects was his favourite part of the job.

Carpentry runs in Parker’s circle, too. Two of his cousins own their own businesses, and both influenced his decision to get into the trade. After graduation, Parker plans to apprentice as a carpenter.

Happy World Teachers' Day! Teachers, thank you for being there every step of the way for our students. You teach our kindergarteners the building blocks of literacy and help them navigate a whole new world away from home. In elementary and middle school, you continue to build on each child's strengths and notice when a student needs extra help. You prepare high school students for diploma exams and equip them for the journey into adulthood. Beyond the classroom, you coach teams, direct school plays, and run clubs, ensuring our students experience everything school life has to offer. For all the jobs you take on and for how much you care, we thank you!

We're flashing back to a summer filled with ! Let's catch up with Olds High School grade 11 student Isaac A., who completed a RAP (Registered Apprenticeship Program) welding placement at Kelly's Welding. This was Isaac's second summer with Kelly's Welding. He started last summer in work experience and has since moved on to earning RAP credits, having completed Tec 1000, Welding 1167 and Welding 2167.

"My favourite thing about the job is the variety of jobs that have to be done," Isaac said.

Looking ahead, Isaac plans to continue his apprenticeship in welding.

Kelly, owner of Kelly's Welding, has supported both high school students and graduates of the CACI pre-employment welding programs.
