Muskoka Heritage Place Muskoka Museum, Muskoka Pioneer Village and the Portage Flyer Train.

In 1958 the Huntsville Rotary Club was aware of the growing number of family artifacts that were showing up at community events. So they set up a temporary small pioneer museum and began to collect and sort these artifacts in an empty school building on Caroline St. Not long after, two members of the local Rotary came up with the idea of a pioneer village and other Rotarians agreed. They found a s

ite just off Brunel Road 33 acres very close to Huntsville's downtown and equipped with its very own beaver pond which was, and is, a pristine slice of natural Muskoka.

Lions Club (part 1 of 4)
The Lions Club International is all about serving the community and improving lives! Their mission? To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace, and promote international understanding! Sure, they’re famous for sight conservation, but they also tackle other cool causes like diabetes awareness, hunger relief, and environmental issues. It’s all about service and volunteerism!

Did you know the Huntsville Lions Club has been around since 1941, beginning with 35 members, mostly local businessmen? They’ve sponsored tons of fun stuff over the years, like youth activities, sports, and scholarships. Plus, they’ve donated to many hospital auxiliary campaigns, the Huntsville Public Library, and even provide financial assistance to people in need of sight-related support! They also back the Bob Rumball Camp for Deaf, CNIB Lake Joseph Camp and Diabetes Society, Camp Huronda, and the Lion's Dialysis Camp, Dorset!

One of the best-known projects of the Huntsville Lions Club is Lions Lookout!

Woodland Pottery Sherds
The Woodland period in Ontario started about 3000 years ago and lasted until the changes that resulted from European contact. One key characteristic of the Woodland period in archaeological investigations is the appearance of pottery. Pottery sherds such as these indicate a long-term settlement or base camp due to the fragile nature of ceramics. The one circled in the lower left was found in an archaeological dig along the shore of Georgian Bay.

Etwell School House - Stisted School Section #4
This rural school house was put together in 1895 by volunteer labor and just $75 worth of materials! It opened on January 1, 1896, when Miss Carrie Hall had a class of 20 students. They moved it from the school yard in Etwell to Muskoka Heritage Place's Pioneer Village in 1967.

Women's Institutes (part 4 of 4)
The Local Women's Institutes really helped out in the community. They’ve helped out with funding local community buildings and organized fundraisers and events to support local families and causes. Back in WW1, they even knitted and sent parcels to the soldiers in the 122nd battalion! Kudos to them for all their hard work!

Throwback Thursday: Stories from the storeroom at Muskoka Heritage Place
Lotto
Lotto, a precursor to Bingo, is a family friendly game where each player has a card with numbers and letters, and a leader will retrieve and call out letters and digits in hopes that one player can make a full row. This particular edition, manufactured by the McLoughlin Bros. company, was popular from its creation in the 1880's until the company was bought out in 1920 and ceased production. Let's hope that the Fisher family of Huntsville had fun with this one!
