Today, April 10th, marks the birthday of Jack Miner, referenced as the “Father of Conservation”. His work with Canada Geese has shaped the way we now understand the migratory path of many bird species. National Wildlife Week was dedicated to Jack Miner’s honour and is held the week of his birthday each year. NWW is a way of encouraging Canadians to appreciate and learn more about the wildlife around them. A visit to Salmonier Nature Park provides an educational and unique experience with the wildlife found in our province.

Salmonier Nature Park will open for the 2026 season on Monday, June 1st, 2026. See you then!

National Wildlife Week encourages us to continue learning about and exploring the outdoors safely. The Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) and Becoming an Outdoors Family (BOF) programs are offered to those who identify as women/non-binary (18+) and families in Newfoundland and Labrador. BOW is a weekend retreat, delivered twice a year, that teaches women outdoor skills and safety. BOF is a one-night camping experience in partnership with ParksNL, to teach families the basics of camping and to safely enjoy their experience.

🏹BOW is scheduled for May 29th-31st, 2026 at Burry Heights and registration is now full! Thank you to everyone who applied. Please keep an eye out on the Forestry, Agriculture and Lands NL page for future BOW events.

⛺️BOF is scheduled for June 13th-14th, 2026 at Butter Pot Provincial Park and the registration package will be available early June.

This playful river otter is one of our cherished residents at Salmonier Nature Park and has been residing at the park since 2017🦦. A river otters diet consists mostly of fish, such as trout, but they are also known to feed on aquatic insects, amphibians, and small mammals. This season, come check out our river otter and the updates at their enclosure!

Say hello to Maple the moose! 🫎Maple has been a resident at SNP for almost 4 years. National Wildlife Week gives us a chance to highlight interesting facts about moose and helps us to better understand them as a species. Animal Care staff at Salmonier Nature Park do a great deal of work to ensure Maple is well fed throughout the year, particularly in the summer months with Maple’s favourite food, birch trees!
