When you decide to throw your hat in the ring, what you don't know is that your trips to the grocery store will never be the same. Your family will learn to expect you to be absent for meals, and that dining in public will also change when people want to tell you their most pressing concern while you're eating at a restaurant. You will learn that you can't defend yourself or express your opinion in a public online forum as the vitriolic members of the keyboard community will have a go at you which can have consequences for your mental health if you are not careful.
But the benefits of trying to envision your community's success for the next turning of the history page and the hope that you leave it a little better than you found it is truly special. To meet members of your community who genuinely care and are curious is a gift. Standing up to make decisions and knowing they have a positive, long term impact is a special part of this role and one that cannot be overstated. With the information you have at hand, you make decisions and you live by them. If they need to be amended because new information becomes available, you do when you can. You are one of 7 voices at the table and being able to see the results of your decisions is as humbling as it is powerful in its impact. I would encourage those seeking to sit at the table to truly understand your motive for this role. It is hard and it is rewarding. Also, please understand your role as that can be frustrating if you don't fully understand what is your job.
While I did not see my term fully through, giving up the post was harder than I imagined it would be. High River is a special place (as all are when your heart is invested) and I challenge anyone hoping to take a seat at the table to check your motive, embrace the good and the bad and be intentional in how you choose to show up. Lead with curiosity and kindness but also resolve and the decisions you make for your community will follow.
