📣Big Lakes County Recognizes Hedibuilt Farms as 2026 Farm Family Award Recipient

Big Lakes County is pleased to announce that Hedibuilt Farms has been selected as this year’s Farm Family Award recipient. The award was presented during the Big Lakes County Hamlet BBQ in Faust on August 27, 2026.

“The Hedrich family is an excellent example of the dedication, resilience and community spirit that make our agricultural community so strong,” said Big Lakes County Reeve Tyler Airth. “From their family’s roots in Faust nearly a century ago to the innovative ways they continue to connect local agriculture with consumers today, their commitment to farming and community is something to be proud of. On behalf of Big Lakes County, I congratulate Hedibuilt Farms on this well-deserved recognition.”

The Hedrich family’s connection to farming in Faust dates back to 1928, when the family homesteaded the farm. Over the years, the family developed strong ties to the community by selling quality farm products, including eggs, meat, and vegetables.

Joe and Tara Hedrich continued that tradition while adapting to changing consumer needs, recognizing that people wanted a closer connection to their food and to know where and how it was produced. In July 2020, the family opened The Farm, a small store selling their home-raised beef and lamb. The store also offers pork and cheese from other small Alberta producers, along with small-batch condiments from other provinces. All products sold are Canadian-made. Last spring, the family expanded its business by purchasing FIX Coffee Bar & Bakery in Slave Lake, with plans to eventually expand The Farm into the location.

The family credits their son Gabriel, Joe’s mother Audrey Hedrich, Ed Hedrich and Nadine Owchar, as well as friends and community members, for their continued support.

“Farming is in our blood. It’s more than just what we do, it’s a way of life that has shaped who we are, the values we carry, and the importance we place on hard work, family and community,” said Tara Hedrich, Hedibuilt Farms.

Farm Family Awards recognize families from North and Central Alberta who best represent the values of the family farm within their rural community. Awards will be presented at the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies (AAAS) Convention on February 6, 2027. Recipients will receive a commemorative award from AAAS and a travel allowance from Big Lakes County.
