🚒 PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER: A WEEK OF HANDS-ON TRAINING 🔥

This week was all about putting the pieces together, testing our crews and building confidence under pressure.

Tuesday night — WATER SUPPLY 💧🚒

Our pump operators worked through a rural water supply operation using a pressurized water source. Tankers hauled water from the hydrant to the dump site, feeding portable tanks and keeping the supply pumper running.

There were a lot of moving pieces—and that’s exactly what made this training valuable. Communication, timing, positioning and coordination all had to come together.

Wednesday night — STRUCTURE FIRE 🔥🏠

Crews faced a simulated structure fire and had to put the entire operation together—from apparatus placement and hydrant connections to hose deployment and laddering the building.

We added training smoke, simulated patients and a MAYDAY involving a downed firefighter to raise the intensity and test how crews performed when the incident became more complicated.

Our newly certified officers took the lead in supervising crews, gaining valuable field experience while putting their training into practice.

This is where training starts to come together.

Individual skills are important. But when the trucks, crews, officers, equipment and communication all have to work together—that’s what makes a fireground operation successful.

Great work by everyone this week! 👏🔥

Training Beyond the Classroom 🔥

Hanover Fire Department crews recently had the opportunity to train with the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal Mobile Live Fire Training Unit (MLFTU) during a three-hour training session.

The MLFTU provided crews with realistic, hands-on scenarios to practice critical skills, including:

🔥 Fire attack
🔎 Search and rescue
🏢 Multi-level operations
🧑‍🚒 Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) integration
🚁 Drone operations

Training in a controlled live-fire environment allows our members to build confidence, sharpen decision-making, and reinforce the teamwork required during real emergencies.

A special thank you to Grey Highlands Fire & Emergency Services for hosting the MLFTU for Grey County and helping provide this valuable training opportunity to local fire departments.

Train hard. Train safely. Be ready. 💪🔥

The fire danger rating for the Town of Hanover is now HIGH.

Conditions are elevated. Burning is still allowed with a valid permit, but be ready to extinguish at all times and keep fires small, contained, and away from anything combustible. We are NOT currently under a fire ban.

A note for our new rural and agricultural properties in the Town of Hanover: Open-air burning in town is governed by By-law 3173-21. Standard recreational campfires require a burn permit and must stay within the by-law limits (fire no larger than 1 metre by 1 metre and 1 metre high, set back at least 5 metres from any building and 3 metres from property lines, trees, or fences).

*Anything larger than that, including brush piles, land-clearing burns, or agricultural burning, is not covered by a standard permit. It requires a Controllable Fire permit, which is only granted with authorization from the Chief Fire Official and a site inspection beforehand. If you are planning a burn over and above a normal campfire, contact the Hanover Fire Department, Fire Prevention Division at 519-364-2780 Ext. 1223 or [email protected] before you do anything. Do not light it until that inspection is done and the permit is issued.

Safety Tips:
• Keep campfires small, attended, and completely out before leaving.
• Have water or a fire extinguisher nearby at all times.
• Avoid burning on windy days.
• Never leave hot coals or embers unattended.
• Dispose of cigarette butts safely, not on the ground.

Note: Agricultural waste, domestic waste, plastics, rubber, painted lumber, or demolition debris may NOT be burned at any time.

Check the current burn risk and apply for a permit anytime at: hanover.burnpermits.com
Let's all do our part to keep Hanover safe.

Smoke from active wildland fires in Northwestern Ontario and the United States is drifting into parts of Northeastern and Central Ontario today. Residents may notice smoke and haze. To see where wildland fire smoke is moving across North America, visit the smoke drift map at firesmoke.ca.
