Thoughts from the tractor seat. Well another day in the field turned into darkness yesterday. More corn stalks. Times like these are a definite bonus! Beautiful sun set witnessed from the tractor seat.
Working in corn stalks like these, one appreciates the guided steering. Not only does the guidance save time and fuel, one can easily get off track because in places there is little indication of what has been worked!
Good lights help as well. Definitely appreciate the upgrade to LED from factory original.
Be safe out there… no need to rush, the rain will come when it comes. What is left to do will wait until it dries again.

Thoughts from the tractor seat. Yesterday I was working a field and the strip pattern caught my eye. The peas did not flourish along these strips. They appear to be following the combine path. We’re they the place the straw sat? Old compaction? Hard to say. The ground worked up the same as where the cover crop was taller. The type of ground changed and was quite variable across the field.
If left till spring, these strips warm up later than other areas. That makes the field later (soil warmed up and dry) for planting in the spring. Fall tillage can help give the field a jump in the spring planting season.

Thoughts from the tractor seat. Well the front of the tractor is completely hidden from view when I am in the cab. Look what happens after 2 or 3 rounds of the field! I stop many times a day to clear the debris from the grills. Engine and exhaust temps were not climbing due to the cooler weather, but one has to keep an eye on these temps! They can climb quickly. Some newer tractors have hydraulic or electric fans that can be reversed for a short time to clear this debris buildup. That would be handy. The winds don’t help, as they lift up the loose corn leaves and swirl them around the tractor.
Stay safe out there. We are coming into Christmas Craft Show time of the year! Other drivers out there may not have their full focus on the road. They may be overly excited about what waits them, or what they just saw!

Thoughts from the tractor seat. Well I am at corn stalks again today. They took the corn off yesterday. Things are working down nice today! I first worked this field last fall. Then again in the spring. This is the third time the Lemken has worked tho field. This fall the ground is easier to work. I am able to go one gear faster on this pass.
Preparing this field for no-till beans next spring.
I used 120L of fuel on 40 acres, with 9 mile total travel to the field. That works out to 3 L per acre! Hills and all! Ploughing would have used up to 4 L per acre. Yesterday I was quoted diesel fuel at $2.03 per L!
The fact that I was working at a higher speed with the same outfit means that the soil structure has already started to improve. The wet part of the field worked up just the same as the higher parts.
Here’s to hoping that the corn stalks feed the earth worms over winter!

It is that time of the year. Working down corn stalks! Yesterday I was in the field for a customer, rain and all doing just that, working down corn stalks. The Heliodor did a good job incorporating the residue. With today’s price of $2.03 per L of farm diesel… there is a $5.00 per acre difference between what it cost to plough the field versus hiring Dudgeon Enterprises to minimum till the field. Minimum tillage will preserve the earth worm population, allowing maximum disposal of the corn residue over winter. Helping to feed the earth worms will increase the soil’s ability to hold and retain water and nutrients. With other inputs going up in price, you may wait save that $5.00 per acre.

Life from the tractor seat. Well fall is upon us. The colours are beautiful this time of the year! Sunny days highlight the beauty and make fall tillage work very enjoyable! This week I have been incorporating the fall manure application. Evidence from last winter shows that the ground worked with the Heliodor does not have the same water and wind soil erosion compared toconventional ploughing.
I was also investigating fields planted to winter wheat this fall. Even though the fields that I looked at had been worked in the spring with the Heliodor, they still had hardened over the summer and the no-till drill still left trenches for the seed to grow in. There was sufficient loose soil to cover the seeds, but there were gaps in the early germination. Evidence shows that a light pass with the Heliodor provides better seed to soil contact… thus better seed germination rate. As the fall progresses, the soil becomes wetter and more prone to this trenching. Going over the field with the Heliodor provide the later wheat planting to have dryer and looser soil for better germination.
