As firefighters we train and practice to be the best we can to be able to fulfill our duties. In an emergency there is a famous quote from Yoda that sums up our commitment to decisive action, “Do or do not, there is no try.” Firefighters know, there’s no half-hearted attempts, we’re all in!

On May 4th, we celebrate International Firefighters' Day (IFFD) – a day dedicated to acknowledging the incredible courage and unwavering dedication of firefighters around the globe!

From battling raging bushfires that threaten our homes and wildlife, to rescuing people from burning buildings and assisting in countless other emergencies firefighters, and the teams that support them, are the unsung heroes of our communities. They work tirelessly, often in perilous conditions, putting their own lives on the line to protect us.

International Firefighters' Day also honours the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice or passed on before us. We remember their bravery and commitment, ensuring their legacy lives on.

Let's take a moment today to honour the bravery, commitment, and selflessness of firefighters everywhere. They are truly the heart of our communities.

* The date, May 4th, was chosen specifically because it is the feast day of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. It’s a time to remember their courage and dedication.

* The IFFD ribbon is blue over red, representing the elements Firefighters work with - water and fire.

Busy weekend for the Hanna Fire Department; three days of Grain Rescue Training. Great training program and a lot of practice on the use of various tools and rigging to facilitate rescue of victims partially or fully engulfed in grain/crop material.

PSA! PEOPLE! PAY! ATTENTION! Yes, it’s another winter storm. But even in the worst weather firefighters respond to vehicle accidents. Today while in response to an MVC near Youngstown with our Rescue Unit, lights flashing and siren on, a southbound 3/4 or 1 ton dark blue crew cab truck passed our unit southbound as we just turned on to HW36 just after the Three Mile corner. Not only is it unsafe, it is illegal to pass an emergency vehicle responding to an incident and if identified, YOU WILL BE CHARGED! The vehicle turned west at the intersection of HW36 and 9 and continued westbound, passing vehicles at great risk to themselves and others on the highway. Unfortunately we were unable to get the license plate. UNBELIEVABLE!!!

We had a great evening discussing fire safety with a very well behaved group of young ladies from the Hanna Girl Guides followed by a quick tour of our fire hall. Huge thank you to firefighters Paul Davies and James Laughlin for helping out.

Devan Boos of the Hanna Firefit Team was excited to represent the Hanna Fire Department at the Firefit Championships World and National Finals September 25-29th, 2024 in Kamloops BC. Unfortunately due to other commitments the rest of the team was unable to join Devan but they were definitely cheering him on from afar! Devan made us all very proud with an exceptional showing at the competition! Devan placed 1st in the Volunteer Category, 3rd in all of Canada and 4th in the World with an outstanding time of 1:19!! Devan has set the bar very high with the Hanna Fire Department fastest time!! Congratulations Devan and very well done!!!

On this solemn day, the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association honours the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11. Their bravery, dedication, and service resonate far beyond borders, reminding us all of the unwavering commitment firefighters show in the face of danger. We stand united in remembrance and pledge to continue supporting those who serve.
