👋Hey Hamilton! Check out this opportunity to learn more about affordable housing with "Thinking Beyond the Market: A Film About Genuinely Affordable Housing."

.
The documentary, Thinking Beyond the Market: A Film About Genuinely Affordable Housing is a cross-Canada tour of best practices that, if applied broadly, could mitigate the housing crisis.

Register early for a showing on Sunday May 17 at 2 p.m. followed by a panel discussion.

The best practices shown include Hamilton’s renoviction bylaw, strengthened rent controls, building non-profit housing on public land and a massive Indigenous project on Indigenous land near Vancouver. Dr. Brian Doucet, housing researcher and associate professor at the University of Waterloo, directed and will be present at the screening, along with a panel to discuss the ideas presented.

“Gather will create affordable apartments for people whose household income is below the household median (approx. $90,000 in Ontario). Gather will charge rents that will ensure that households are not paying more than 30% of their income on housing. Additionally, Gather is targeting 30% of units to be eligible to receive municipal housing subsidies.”

“These middle-income earners are literally the backbone of our neighbourhood and communities, including health-care workers, education professionals, first responders, construction and skilled trades workers, transportation workers, service sector workers, arts and culture workers and public-sector workers...Yet the numbers tell a stark story as nearly one million ‘essential workers’ across the GTHA earning good, middle-income wages from $52,000 to $104,000 annually are now struggling to secure stable and affordable housing in today’s market.”

Indwell's new initative, Gather, seeks to fill this gap through the creation of affordable homes for those being priced out of today's rental market.

🔊 Big news!

We are pleased to announce a new addition to the Indwell Family of Companies: Gather.

Gather is a brand new Indwell initiative that will create and operate quality affordable homes in welcoming communities for our neighbours who are being priced out of today’s rental housing market.

Don’t worry! Here at Indwell we’ll continue to do what we do best — creating and providing deeply affordable *supportive* homes accompanied by housing, health and social supports for people at risk of being homeless or living in precarious housing.

Gather will build on the Indwell and Flourish experience by meeting the growing need for affordable houses. As a non-profit housing developer and property manager, Gather will offer well-designed high-quality living spaces for households below the Ontario median income (currently $90,000). This will include single-income households, families, newcomers to Canada, and seniors living on fixed incomes.

Find out more — follow Gather Affordable Housing on social media, and check out the website here: https://gatherhousing.ca/

“Gather was created to meet the needs of the growing number of working households and individuals, newcomers and seniors who are being priced out of today’s rental market. This community bond campaign is a chance for all of us to invest in solutions that will have an impact for generations. When we come together to create affordable homes, we’re strengthening the social and economic fabric of entire neighbourhoods and communities.”
