Meet ✨the white-handed gibbon✨

These agile primates are native to Southeast Asia and are famous for their incredible ability to swing through the trees using their long arms, a form of movement called brachiation.🌿

White-handed gibbons spend much of their lives high in the forest canopy, where they use their strong arms and grasping hands to move from branch to branch. Their distinctive calls can also travel impressive distances, helping family groups communicate with one another.

While "On Safari!™" they can be seen from the "African Queen" Boat Cruise but listen closely and you can often hear them throughout the park!👂

On August 22, 1969, African Lion Safari opened its gates with a vision from our founder, Colonel G.D. Dailley: to create a place where people could experience wildlife while helping to conserve it for future generations.

Today, that vision continues. From our first 40 lions to more than 1,000 animals representing over 100 species, our commitment to wildlife and conservation remains at the heart of everything we do. 🐘🦒🦜

For 57 years, we’ve had the privilege of connecting generations of visitors with wildlife, inspiring curiosity, creating memories and supporting conservation.

Have you ever looked closely at a giraffe's head? 🦒

While giraffes are best known for their two distinctive horn-like structures, called ossicones, some giraffes have five! In addition to the two larger ossicones on top of the head, they can have one in the centre of the forehead and two smaller ones behind the ears.

Unlike true horns or antlers, ossicones are made of ossified cartilage (cartilage that turns into bone) and remain covered in skin and fur.

Did you know that elephants are a keystone species? 🐘🌿

This means they play a vital role in maintaining the biodiversity of their ecosystem and are essential for the health and survival of many other species.

They disperse seeds, break up thick undergrowth, and create pathways that other animals can use, making their conservation key to preserving ecosystems.

Their footprint can even become its own ecosystem for much smaller species such as tadpoles.

As we recognize Asian Elephant Awareness Month this August, it’s a great reminder that protecting elephants means protecting so much more than just one species. 🧡

A beautiful reminder of why conservation matters. 🧡

The scimitar-horned oryx was once extinct in the wild, but dedicated conservation efforts have helped give this incredible species a second chance.

Did you know the scimitar-horned oryx acquired their name from the unique shape of their horns which resembles a Scimitar, an Asian sword with a long curved blade?

👀The scimitar-horned oryx can be seen in Section 5, Rocky Ridge Veldt, of our drive through Game Reserves.

🐘 August is Asian Elephant Awareness Month!

Did you know Asian elephants are endangered? Their population has declined by an estimated 50% over the last three generations, due to habitat loss, poaching, and increased human-wildlife conflict.

Asian elephants are more than just iconic wildlife, they are a keystone species. They help to maintain healthy ecosystems by dispersing seeds, clear thick vegetation, and create pathways that other animals use to move through forests.

At African Lion Safari, we're proud to care for our incredible herd while inspiring guests to learn more about their biology, behaviour, and the importance of protecting their future through conservation, research, and education.
