Meet Dolores, our prehensile-tailed porcupine!

Native to South America, Dolores spends most of her time in the trees, using her incredible tail like a fifth limb to climb, balance, and reach her favourite foods. As she forages, she also helps spread seeds and plant material throughout her habitat.

Did you know? Porcupines can't shoot their quills, and their quills aren't poisonous or venomous! Their quills are made from the same material as your fingernails and are only released when they come into contact with something.

It's World Turtle Day!🐢

In the fall of 2025, African Lion Safari welcomed a cohort of baby wood turtles! These young turtles will spend their first two years growing and learning under professional care at African Lion Safari before being released back into the wild.

This conservation approach, called head-starting, gives hatchlings a boost by helping them survive the most vulnerable years, when predation risk is highest.

The wood turtle is one of Canada’s rarest freshwater turtle species. It’s at risk of extinction and coordinated conservation efforts are needed. Our animal care specialists and research biologists have been working together to support the growth and development of these baby wood turtles until their safe release, helping to save this species from further decline. 🧡

Turtles are on the move... and while they may not be breaking any speed records, they are travelling with an important mission🐢💚

Spring is an important time for Ontario’s native turtles as they begin moving in search of mates and nesting sites. Unfortunately, these seasonal journeys often mean crossing roadways, putting already declining turtle populations at risk.

You can help by slowing down and keeping an eye out for wildlife crossing the road. Small actions can make a big difference for conservation!
