A common question prospective foster parents ask is whether passing a foster application is “really hard.”"

The better way to think about it is this:
The process is not designed to be impossible. It is designed to be thorough.

In Ontario, foster parent applicants are assessed on their ability to provide a safe, stable, and supportive home. The process can include interviews, background checks, references, training, and a home study.

That can take time, but the time has a purpose.

It helps determine who is eligible, what kind of support they may need, and what type of placement may be the best fit.

And yes, applicants can be rejected. But when that happens, they should receive clear reasons why and, when possible, guidance on what could improve their eligibility in the future.

One of the quietest reasons people put off becoming a foster parent in Ontario is the worry that it will take forever, and they have no idea what they are signing up for.
Here is the honest version. From the first phone call to your first placement, expect three to eight months. The exact length depends on how quickly paperwork and background checks come back, and how training schedules line up with your availability.

What happens in those months matters. Interviews, a home visit, training in trauma-informed care, a home study, and an orientation where you meet the people who will be on the other end of the 24/7 phone line once you start fostering. None of it is wasted time. All of it is how Safe Harbours and you both arrive at certification, confident in the decision.

If you have been thinking about fostering and the timeline has been holding you back, the first step is just a conversation. No application. No commitment.

Before you sign with any foster agency in Ontario, there are five things worth asking about.

They are the difference between feeling supported through a placement and feeling alone in it.

A quick checklist for anyone thinking about fostering.

A lot of people who would make excellent foster parents talk themselves out of starting the conversation because they assume the bar is impossibly high or the process is impossible to navigate.

The truth is more reassuring. In Ontario, the eligibility criteria are clear. The timeline is real but manageable, usually three to eight months. The home study and training are thorough, not designed to trip you up. And yes, not everyone is approved, but the reasons are about safety and fit, not about who you are as a person.

If you have been quietly wondering whether you might qualify, the easiest way to find out is to ask. A short conversation with Safe Harbours will tell you more than weeks of googling.

If you have ever wondered whether you are too old to become a foster parent in Ontario, you are not the only one asking. It is one of the most common questions Safe Harbours hears.

There is no upper age limit. There is a minimum (21) and a long list of things that actually matter: your health, your home, your patience, the people in your life, and your willingness to keep learning. A lot of our foster parents came to fostering after their own kids moved out, after a career shift, or after years of quietly thinking about it.

If that sounds like you, the first step is just a conversation. No paperwork. No pressure. Just answers to the questions you have been carrying.

Reunification is one of the parts of foster care that many prospective foster parents do not fully understand at first.

Foster care is often temporary. In many cases, the goal is to provide a child with safety, structure, and care while their family works toward a safe return.
That can bring up real emotions for foster parents. You may be asked to care deeply for a child while also supporting their connection to their birth family, culture, and identity.

This is why support matters.

At Safe Harbours, foster parents receive training, guidance, and ongoing support so they are not navigating the process alone.
