Today, we remember the millions of lives forever impacted by the Transatlantic Slave Trade, those who were taken from their homes, families and communities, and those whose courage, resilience and resistance helped shape the world we live in today.

Remembrance is not only about looking back. It is a call to action.

Let us honour their memory by choosing respect over prejudice, inclusion over exclusion, and understanding over intolerance. Let us create communities where every person is valued, every culture is respected, and every voice has the opportunity to be heard.

The legacy of those who endured slavery reminds us that freedom, dignity and equality must never be taken for granted.

Remember their stories. Honour their resilience. Stand against racism. Embrace inclusion. Build a future where everyone belongs.

Today, we remember. Today, we reflect. Today, we choose to do better.

Captain George Spicer's last day on the Glooscap.

On 19 July 1910 George Spicer wrote "Light breeze from the westward, finished the cargo at 2 p.m.; 3 p.m. boat and men came and moored the ship to Mariner's Harbour, Staten Island and after she was moored we put everything in shape, and locked the doors, and gave the keys to Mr. McDougal who gave me a receipt for the ship and all on board, I felt bad to leave the ship."
