πŸ₯‹ **HERO GRAPPLING | TEAM DAY** πŸ₯‹
πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ **HERO Grappling & 12 Wing BJJ β€” All Schedules Welcome**

**To all HERO Grappling students, regardless of training schedule, and our friends and teammates from 12 Wing BJJ in Shearwater:**

We are bringing the team together.

πŸ“… **Thursday, September 17th**
πŸ•“ **1615 hrs**
πŸ“ **S120 Building β€” Room 323, 3rd Floor**

This Team Day is an opportunity to step away from our individual schedules and come together as one grappling community. Whether you are brand new to the program, a seasoned student, or part of our extended 12 Wing BJJ family, **you are invited.**

HERO Grappling has always been about more than belts, rankings, or competition. It is about developing capable people through discipline, consistency, humility, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

This is an opportunity to train together, learn from one another, recognize the progress of our teammates, and strengthen the relationships that make this program what it is.

We are fortunate to have the following senior members confirmed to participate:

πŸ₯‹ **1st Degree Black Belt James Locke**
πŸ₯‹ **Black Belt Eric Nevitt**
πŸ₯‹ **Black Belt Atlas Del Mar**
πŸ₯‹ **Brown Belt Mike DeSaulniers**
πŸ₯‹ **Assistant Coaching Staff**

Whether you have been training for years or have only recently stepped onto the mats, **your place is with the team.**

Come ready to train, learn, share experiences, and support the people beside you.

**One team. One standard. Continuous development.**

We look forward to seeing everyone on the mats.

Let's address the facts and the reality of our program.

At HERO Grappling, we genuinely focus on the continuous development of the basics and then work on translating those fundamentals into practical applications that make sense for military members who need to process information at alarming speeds.

We build muscle memory while ensuring that what we drill remains cognitively relevant to our daily and operational circumstances.

Your belt represents the time dedicated to developing subject-matter expertise, coupled with the ability to execute the technical fundamentals of hand-to-hand grappling. However, achieving a coloured belt is not the ultimate goal; it is simply a by-product of the journey each individual is on.

The core motivation of the program is to continually equip military members with the tools and experiences necessary for personal and professional growth.

If a military member learns the basics of break-falling, the technical stand-up, and the core essentials of escaping pins during their first series of classes, they are better equipped to survive a physical confrontation than an untrained peer.

If a military member continues to develop their understanding and ex*****on of grappling techniques and methodology, so too will their ability to manage and respond effectively to a physical confrontation.

Coach Atlas Del Mar advocates for students of the program to seek out additional opportunities to improve, whether that means joining a local BJJ or Judo club, studying visual material, or reading instructional content.

The aim is to inspire members to pursue a journey of continuous technical development and personal growth that is best suited to their individual lifestyle and schedule.

However, the program is purposefully designed to acknowledge and recognize those members who demonstrate discipline and maintain a consistent training posture.

Every year, the program recognizes students who have demonstrated meaningful improvements in their understanding and ex*****on of grappling techniques and methodology.

Every six months to a year, evaluations take place. Some members may be recognized with a stripe on their belt, while others may receive further acknowledgement through the awarding of a coloured belt.

This is a formal notice to all HERO GRAPPLING program students that a team day will be taking place in the near future. Instructors and military members who have been instrumental in establishing and developing CAF BJJ will be in attendance.

Stay tuned for more information to follow.

Coach Atlas Del Mar has consistently advocated for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training among military and law enforcement personnel because of its practical application as a combat system built around proficiency in a four-step progression.

Rather than focusing exclusively on developing world-class grappling champions who have mastered every aspect of the discipline, Coach Del Mar’s primary objective is to develop program members into well-rounded practitioners who can achieve functional proficiency at each stage of the system.

Why not train exclusively for mastery? The simple truth is that achieving true subject-matter expertise in BJJ requires an extraordinary investment of time and dedication. It can take decades of consistent training to develop the level of proficiency required to reliably impose one’s will against other highly trained practitioners. For the average person, however, the objective does not necessarily need to be absolute mastery. Developing a practitioner who can effectively manage the vast majority of untrained opponents while also remaining capable against less-experienced trained practitioners represents a significantly more attainable learning curve.

By ensuring that program members develop a comprehensive understanding of grappling through a structured four-step system, practitioners can efficiently and progressively build proficiency across each stage. This approach emphasizes broad competence, practical application, and the ability to transition effectively between different phases of a grappling engagement.

Below is an explanation from a well-known tactician outlining the concept of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a four-step system.
