The Canadian Federation of Students and the Circle of First Nations, Metis & Inuit Students recognize September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to commemorate and honour Residential School survivors, families, and communities.

We’ve complied a few recommendations for ways to participate in below. However, we encourage you to do the work, to listen and learn from Indigenous people’s histories and experiences, today and every day. Reconciliation should not be something we address solely on July 21 or September 30. It is an ongoing practice of reflection, unlearning, and participating in solidarity-based action.

🔸 Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action
🔸 Watch online events hosted by the NCTR
🔸 Donate to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society (IRSSS)
🔸 Educate yourself and the true history of so-called Canada

International students provide a richer campus and educational experience, contribute to the local economy, and should be treated with fairness.

They are also one of the largest demographics of students in Canada, making up a fifth of all post-secondary students. This means there are over half a million students paying more than 3 times the tuition as domestic students for the same education.

This election, students are demanding a bold stance in supporting international students by:
🌍 Providing stable funding transfers to eliminate all differential fees
🌍 Streamlining immigration pathways
🌍 Ensuring provincial governments provide unrestricted public healthcare access by including this requirement in the Canada Health Act

International students don’t have the right to vote, but they’re counting on domestic students to vote for bold, progressive policies.

--

🌍 Fournssant des transferts de fonds stables afin d’éliminer tous les frais différentiels;
🌍 Simplifiant les voies menant à l’immigration;

Many Inuit, First Nations and Métis people choose not to participate in Canadian elections, but there are a number of ways to encourage those who do vote, to vote for bold, progressive policies.

This election, demand that federal leaders enact real change that supports the Calls to Action published by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. 📢

The Calls to Action that reference education include:
📄 Eliminating educational and employment gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people
📄 Drafting new Indigenous education legislation with the full participation and informed consent of Indigenous peoples
📄 Protecting the right to Indigenous languages and teaching them as credit courses

Read and share the Calls to Action, and demand bold action that supports them from the next federal government. ✊

--

📄 L'élimination de l’écart en matière d’éducation et d'emploi entre les personnes autochtones et non autochtones;
📄 La formulation de nouvelles dispositions législatives sur l'éducation des Autochtones, avec la pleine participation et le consentement éclairé des peuples autochtones;

Did you know that post-secondary education is a necessity for over 70% of new jobs in Canada today? ⠀

Despite this reality, the rising cost of post-secondary education has made it increasingly difficult for many students to enter and maintain their studies. ⠀

Students shouldn't have to go through this. ⠀

This election, students need federal leaders who will take a bold stance in supporting access to education for all students by: ⠀
⚡️ Investing in a fully public, universal, tuition-free system of post-secondary education governed by a national Post-Secondary Education Act ⠀
⚡️ Introducing debt alleviation programs for current debt-holders, including eliminating interest rates on all student loans ⠀

By heading to the polls in big, bold numbers, students can ensure their issues are priorities for the next government. 🗳️ ⠀

-- ⠀

Although students had access to CESB after grassroots efforts, many were excluded and the program was cut short while the pandemic ravaged on. ⠀

This election, students need federal leaders who have the political will to enact bold policies that will support students like: ⠀
✅ National ChildCare program that is universal for children 0-12 and children with disabilities over the age of 12 ⠀
✅ Rent control and investing in affordable housing ⠀
✅ Support programs that establish food security ⠀
✅ A progressive tax system that ensure everyone pays their fair share ⠀

By heading to the polls in large numbers, students can ensure progressive, bold policies that will provide the necessary support to live with dignity and respect. ⠀

-- ⠀
