The Nova Scotia government introduced the Public Safety Act yesterday, which aims to update provincial laws, improve public safety both online and in community, and to increase support for victims of crime.

The new bill will make amendments to six bills covering a large range of public safety topics, including the Intimate Images and Cyber Security Act.

Together We Thrive is a free, trauma-informed, online peer support group for survivors of IPV-BI, launching the last week of September.

The Progress Monitoring Committee (PMC) was convened in 2023 by the provincial and federal governments to monitor progress, report publicly, and foster accountability for the recommendations of the Final Report of the Mass Casualty Commission (MCC).

GBV is a central part of this work. The MCC’s recommendations called for significant changes to how gender-based and intimate partner violence are understood, prevented, and responded to.

The PMC has now released its final report.

We’re taking a closer look at what has been done, what progress has been made, and what the report tells us is still needed to strengthen Nova Scotia’s response to GBV. 💜

IN THE NEWS: Three months after the Supreme Court of Canada voted in favour of a new tort on IPV, the Ontario Superior Court is providing guidance on how IPV should be assessed in court following the case of Mitchell v. Mitchell.

The case, and its outcome, is an important step toward a legal system that better understands and responds to survivors’ realities.

IN THE NEWS: A father from Saint John's received two life prison terms, to be served concurrently with no chance of parole for 25 years, this past week after he was convicted of the murder of his two sons, aged 10 and 17.

This case is another reminder of how community education can play a key role in the prevention of intimate partner and gender-based violence.

Over the past year, THANS and other community partners have been supporting communities across Nova Scotia to build knowledge, confidence, and practical skills for recognizing and responding to intimate partner and domestic violence. 💜

Together, we’ve been working towards preventing violence, supporting those experiencing it, and centering community as the first response before situations escalate to crisis. 🌱

THANS has everything you need to learn about Bill C-16, the Protecting Victims Act, and how it's working to strengthen the response to IPV and femicide in Canada.

Since Bill C-16 received royal assent in June of this year, questions around which laws are being added and updated, as well as when these laws will take effect, have been circulating. We’ve put together some important information to help bring you more clarity to this new federal Bill.

Join THANS and for a free training workshop, open to 2SLGBTQIA+ folks, on August 27th at the Captain William Spry Public Library/Community Centre, from 2pm - 3:30pm! Open space for questions & discussion will run from 3:30pm - 4:00pm.

The Neighbours, Friends, and Families training program teaches people how to recognize, respond, and refer in incidences of intimate partner and domestic violence. At it's core, it is about empowering community to be the first response. 💜

Lunch will be provided, and those who attend receive a certificate of completion from Western University's Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children.
