February is African Heritage Month! In NS, this year's provincial theme is "Legacy in Action: Celebrating Black Brilliance".

This year's theme is to bring attention and pay tribute to the enduring legacy of excellence, resilience and innovation that has been, and continues to be demonstrated by people of African descent throughout centuries in Nova Scotia.

Throughout the month of February, there are events and activities happening on campus, in HRM, and other parts of NS.

These are opportunities to connect with communities and engage with the rich knowledge and history of people of African descent in this province.

For more information on each event, please connect with each organization for more details.

Enough is Enough!

Stop Intimate Partner Violence!

Nova Scotia consistently places among the highest rates of intimate partner violence of any province in Canada.

In Nova Scotia, over 30% of women and 22% of men have reported being physically or sexually assaulted by their partners since the age of 15.

African Nova Scotian and Indigenous women, girls, and Non-Binary people face high rates of gender-based violence because of factors including not limited to colonialism, racism, sexism, homophobia, and Transphobia.

On September 2024, the NSNDP introduced Bill No. 482, declaring Intimate Partner Violence an epidemic in Nova Scotia.

Since that day, 6 women have been reported killed by their male partners across the province, with those violent incidents ultimately claiming the lives of 12 people.

Intimate partner violence creates devastating impacts on family, friends and entire communities. We must push our government officials to do more.

NSPIRG strongly encourages all levels of government to implement the recommendations laid out in the Mass Casualty Commission Final Report.

If you or someone you know is experiencing intimate partner violence, the following resources are available:
