A World for Bees

A World for Bees I'm a Consulting Apiculturist, Ecologist and Educator in Nova Scotia. My business centres on Natural Beekeeping, native bees, and conservation ecology.

I post about the joys and challenges of connecting with bees, food, and nature. Beekeeping posts feature the Natural Beekeeping approach I use in my own apiary. Heading into my 9th year with honey bees, I've realized that few people relate to their bees the way I do. I am inspired by Ross Conrad's Natural Beekeeping approach, and I also use some basic Biodynamic techniques.

Tomorrow my bees should be virtually Varroa-free! One of the most important ways to get colonies ready for winter is to do a strong mite-treatment when the colony starts rearing winter bees. In the maritimes they begin around mid-August.

Ideally you take honey supers off first.

I've always used the organic products that don't leave treatment residues in the hive. In Autumn, I use formic acid which can pe*****te the brood cells to kill developing Varroa mites. I've never lost Queens or had any other ill effects, but I will do colony assessments tomorrow after removing the strips.

Hi folks! I hate to refer to the cold season when we're trying to enjoy every last moment of late summer warmth, but....it's time. For the bees, that is!

August is the time to start getting your honey bees ready for winter.

I'll do more frequent posts leading up to mid-September, to show you what I'm doing for my bees, and when. 🐝 Then on September 15th, I'll offer a new course on how to winter your bees successfully! 🐝

Just got back from a magical time in the apiary. My bees will be in a music video!!! It was so lovely to meet Adria Jackson Harp and hear the song she wrote after Queen Elizabeth died. There's a tradition in many cultures that bees accompany souls up to heaven, which is why it's important to let them know when somebody has passed. I can't wait to see the video in October!

Good morning, bees! The colonies have been recovering their strength this summer, and getting some nice new woodenware and frames. I'm transitioning back to double-deep hives (still 8-frame, of course) because deeps work better for places with strong nectar-flows. Looks like the girls pollinated a lot of apples this year!

I was at the Cole Harbour Heritage Farm Museum this afternoon, checking bees and enjoying the garden. If you haven't been to the farm this season, check it out! The property is Certified Wildlife Friendly by the Canadian Wildlife Federation / Fédération canadienne de la faune - Canada's largest conservation organization 😊 I'm very fortunate to be connected to both!

Now THIS is a beautiful example of an urban apiary! Kudos to Nova Scotia Community College - NSCC for laying off the mower and allowing a natural pollinator meadow to bloom. Creating pollinator habitat is the BEST thing we can do for bees and butterflies, as it supports native species.

Happy Solstice and Happy Indigenous People's Day!
It seems fitting that Indigenous peoples should be celebrated as the sun reaches it's highest point in the sky ☀️
