Thursday October 9th is World Ombuds Day, a day to raise awareness and recognise the unique role of an Ombudsman.

People interact with government services in many ways each day in areas such as healthcare, education, recreation, social development, justice, transit, waste collection, and many more.

In Nova Scotia, the Ombudsman is an independent officer of the House of Assembly who promotes fairness and accountability in the administration of provincial and municipal laws including the delivery of public programs and services. The Office of the Ombudsman examines the delivery of those public programs and services to ensure they are being administered fairly. The Office also investigates disclosures of wrongdoing involving provincial government and provides focussed outreach to children, youth, and seniors in care of the province, and persons in custody at provincial correctional facilities.

You can learn more about the Office of the Ombudsman by visiting their website at www.ombudsman.novascotia.ca as well as through a free online module ‘Nova Scotia Office of the Ombudsman: An Introduction’ which is available on its website at https://ombudsman.novascotia.ca/introduction/index.html #/ Provincial employees can access the free eLearning module through SuccessFactors Learning Management System (LMS).

If you have questions about the role of the Ombudsman, or if you wish to arrange a presentation on the work of the Office, please contact 902-424-6780, toll free at 1-800-670-1111, or by email at [email protected]

Are you interested in provincial and municipal government affairs? Do you have any ideas or advice for the Ombudsman on youth issues? If you are between the ages of 12 and 19, we encourage you to apply to the Youth Ombudsman Council. Members will earn $25 gift cards for each meeting they attend.

The Youth Ombudsman Council will bring together youth from across the province through virtual meetings. Council members will have the opportunity to learn more about government, share their ideas on issues important to them and their peers, and have their voices heard on issues affecting Nova Scotia's youth.

We value the perspective of all young people, including the unique experiences they have had while receiving government services. Whether you already participate in community organizations or are new to this type of role, all interested young people are encouraged to apply. Financial assistance will be offered to participants as needed.

Registration deadline: March 23, 2024
