The NUICC Urban Indigenous Knowledge Mobilisation Hub’s national survey on UNDRIP and the State of Urban Indigenous Organisations in Canada is the first-of-its-kind survey asking urban Indigenous non-profits and charities how they use Indigenous governance in their organisations, why it matters to them, and what impact it made.

More than one million urban Indigenous people live in Canadian cities and receive vital services from 3,000+ urban Indigenous organisations. As urban Indigenous people, we are often denied both our portable rights and our urban rights. The results of this survey will be used to assess how many service providers are using Indigenous governance and how they understand the importance of a rights-based approach to our work. The survey results will be shared with all respondents and published in our report, “UNDRIP and Governance in Urban Indigenous Organisations in Canada.” The report will share insights from urban Indigenous organisations across the country, tell the story of how we work with our urban Indigenous rights, and how that impacts our operational success and the impact we have in our communities.

The Urban Indigenous Knowledge Mobilisation Hub was founded by the National Urban Indigenous Coalitions Council (NUICC) in 2021 and has since been operated by the Aboriginal Council of Winnipeg and Metro Vancouver Aboriginal Executives Council. The Hub produces policy briefs to promote policy change to improve the lives of urban Indigenous people. This survey is funded by Imagine Canada and the Department of Justice. We welcome urban Indigenous researchers and policy makers to join our community to help make change for urban Indigenous people.

🚨 Indigenous Services Canada has recently announced the cancellation of all funding for urban Indigenous coalitions across Canada. This latest funding attack on our rights relies on Canada’s old divide and conquer strategies, pitting urban federations against each other, while Canada’s colonial policies cause displacement and urbanization. Urban Indigenous organisations and charities have never waited for Canada to advance our rights, and with Carney’s cuts to coalitions we need to stand on our rights and Indigenous governance to protect our communities.

Join the National Urban Indigenous Coalition Council (NUICC) on Wednesday, October 29th at 10am PT/1pm ET (90min), and hear from other urban Indigenous non-profit leaders on ways that Indigenous governance principles, such as kinship and Indigenous ways of knowing and doing, help us improve urban Indigenous non-profits and charities.

Our guest speaker is Senator 'Sol' Sanderson, member of the Chakastaypasin Band of the Cree Nation, chief of his reserve for three terms, leader of the Federation of Sovereign Nationals from 1979 to 1986, where he currently serves as a member of its senate, and a pioneer in Indigenous governance and education. He was instrumental in ensuring that treaties were entrenched in the Constitution and recognized internationally.

Host: Eugène Boulanger (Sahtu Dene); shúhtagot’ı̨nę from Tulít’a. Eugene is a facilitator, multidisciplinary digital media artist, originally hailing from TULÍT'A in the Sahtú region of Denendeh. Eugene came back home to the North to advance change in the communities before learning that change comes from within. Eugene has since centred the promotion of healing and wellness for Indigenous communities with a focus on Indigenous men and boys in his practices.

Community of Practice Session Live from Winnipeg
Friday, September 27 at 12-1pm CT (10-11am PT; 1-2pm ET)
Policy developers and researchers from across Turtle Island are welcome to attend NUICC’s Urban Indigenous Knowledge Mobilisation Hub’s monthly Community of Practice where we share and cooperate on research and policy work that matters to urban Indigenous communities. At this month’s session, we will discuss NUICC’s research work plan (funded by Imagine Canada and the Dept of Justice). We are conducting an urban Indigenous ecosystem scan to better inform coalitions on ourselves and our sector, plus examine UNDRIP implications for our urban Indigenous non-profits and charities.

The Hub is a space for you to give feedback on NUICC projects and learn what other researchers and community organizations are doing to help make change for urban Indigenous people. Held on the last Friday of each month (10-11am PT/1-2pm ET).

The 2-day conference produced by NUICC features twenty speakers to inform our work for urban Indigenous communities. MVAEC is the Vancouver member of NUICC.
