The University of Guelph Campus Safety Office (CSO) was established in 1967 and is one of the longest serving campus policing services in the nation. The CSO is comprised of 3 divisions: Operations, Fire Prevention, and Emergency Management. Our service includes 4 Sergeants, 12 Special Constables, 4 Dispatchers, 2 Fire Prevention Officers, and Administrative and Management staff. There are currently four platoons that work a 12-hour rotating schedule providing continuous service to our campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Did you know that occupant loads are made to save lives? When the number of people in the room exceeds the maximum safe capacity it creates safety risks, can block emergency exits and egress, and violate fire code regulations.

U of G Alert is the University’s critical incident notification system. U of G uses this tool to send important information whenever a critical incident happens on campus or if the University is closed due to bad weather. All current U of G students, staff, and faculty are automatically registered with their U of G email.

You are encouraged to add at least one additional contact method via the link in bio OR text UOGUELPH to 723389 to opt in to receive notifications from U of G Alert. The more ways you can be reached during a critical incident or University closure, the better.

Always use a U-Lock when locking your bike. They are more secure than most other locks because they are more resistant to cutting than other types of locks. U-Locks can provide greater security for your bikes.

If you are an undergraduate student who bikes to and from campus, connect with the or come to the Campus Safety Office (32 Trent Lane) to exchange your old lock for a new, stronger U-Lock.

Did you know that candles and incense are not permitted in residence? Take them off your packing list.

Before you pack any cooking appliances for your new residence, make sure they’re allowed! Cooking appliances are only permitted in areas with approved kitchen facilities. If you’ll be cooking for yourself this year for the first time, remember to practice kitchen safety by staying with your food, only cooking when alert, and keeping anything that burns at least three feet away from the stove.

Camping and cottage nights are for relaxing - not reacting

With peak season in full swing, campfires and BBQs are everywhere. But one unattended flame can spread fast in dry conditions.

Don’t leave it till it’s out:
✔ Pour water on it
✔ Stir it up to ensure no hidden embers
✔ Make sure it’s completely cool

Because the only thing that should be spreading this summer is good vibes.

When packing for your new residence room or off-campus house, make sure you choose electrical equipment with a recognized Canadian certification mark such as Underwriters Laboratories (ULC) or Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

Uncertified power bars and electrical equipment pose severe fire and shock hazards.

If you have a mini fridge in your residence room, or any heavy appliance off-campus, plug it directly into a wall outlet. Never use an extension cord or power bar.
