MACDONALD INSTITUTE houses the Office of the Dean, College of Social and Applied Human Sciences. College department offices are located in the Macdonald Institute, the MacKinnon Building and the H.L. Welcome to the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences (CSAHS), which traces its origins and traditions to the establishment of the Macdonald Institute, one of the University of Guelph's three fo

unding colleges. CSAHS has nearly 5,000 undergraduate students, more than 300 graduate students and 200 faculty and staff. The college provides programming in a range of social science and applied human science disciplines and support to discipline-based and inter/multi-disciplinary researchers. The overarching goal of the college is to serve society through the provision of world-class education supported by innovative programs of research and outreach. We believe that the best education in the 21st century is one that combines academic study and real life experience. Our goal is to instill in students the knowledge, skills, awareness and critical sense of engagement with society that will enable them to reach their full potential to make a difference wherever they go in the world. The strength of the college lies in the capacity and achievement of its people, ample evidence of which can be found in past issues of the CSAHS Insight (formerly the CSAHS Bulletin) and elsewhere in this website. In Research, you will learn of the tremendous growth in activity that has occurred in recent years and of the impact of the college's researchers in their chosen fields and in society generally. In Advancement, you will learn about the rich heritage built by 11 decades of alumni and of the many ways in which our graduates support the life and objectives of the college and the university. The college is comprised of five departments: Family Relations and Applied Nutrition (FRAN), Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology and Anthropology. These departments offer a range of academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, several of which are professionally accredited. The college is also home to two large inter-disciplinary programs – International Development Studies and Criminal Justice and Public Policy – that draw on expertise housed in several academic units. The college is committed to conducting research that is socially responsive, engaged with the community and effective in shaping public policy. It has two very unique structures that facilitate this work including The Centre for Families, Work and Wellbeing (CFWW) and the Institute on Community Engaged Scholarship (ICES) (including the Research Shop). These are active sites of collaboration among faculty, students and community partners and exemplify the college's commitment to community engaged scholarship, knowledge mobilization and social transformation. As we put teaching and research into practice, CSAHS strives above all else to improve the everyday quality of life for individuals and families – at home, in the workplace and in communities near and far.

CSAHS is so proud of Adiia Stone, who won best PhD. Talk at Neuroscience Day this past May 2026.

U of G hosted the event and it is momentous that a Psychology major came out on top among so many science majors.

Adiia’s research “focuses on characterizing individuality in drug preference in a model of opioid-stimulant polydrug use in rats to relate to what is seen in humans; highly variable patterns and motivations for polydrug combinations that are highly dependent on individual preferences, and I’ve found this is also true in rats.”

Read more about Adiia’s research as well as how her win at Neuroscience Day impacted her life and pathway moving forward.

For Pride Month, we’re featuring some of our faculty and students who are making a difference with their research for future Canadian 2SLGBTQ+ people.

Nealob Kakar, is a working toward getting her PhD in Social Practice and Transformational Change and is researching “the ways communities at the intersection of marginalization, specifically racialized 2SLGBTQ+ Survivors, practice care, mutual aid, radical love, and a praxis of indispensability and radical relationality for one another in ways that colonial bodies of policy have not been and will never be able to.”

Her goal is for her research findings to help people reconceptualize policies while considering community-based perspectives that are critical to reimagining a future where collective care is fair and just.

Researchers like Nealob give us hope that the world can be a safe space for everyone to exist and thrive.
