Winter Driving Safety Tips from Your Military Police
As winter settles in, road conditions can quickly change, making driving more challenging. As members of the Canadian Armed Forces, we know the importance of staying safe while on the road. Here are some essential tips to help you navigate safely during the colder months:
1. Check Your Vehicle: Ensure your tires are properly inflated and suitable for winter conditions. Keep your windshield washer fluid topped up, and check that your defrosting system is working efficiently.
2. Slow Down: Reduce your speed, especially on icy or snowy roads. Allow more space between your vehicle and others to account for longer stopping distances.
• Speeding in Winter Conditions: Fines for speeding can range from $110 to $1,000, depending on how much you exceed the posted speed limit. Unsafe speed for winter conditions could result in additional penalties or charges.
3. Be Prepared for Emergencies: Carry a winter survival kit, including blankets, non-perishable food, water, a flashlight, and extra gloves and hats. A shovel, salt, or sand can also help in case you get stuck.
4. Clear Your Vehicle: Before hitting the road, clear all snow and ice off your vehicle, including the roof, windows, and lights. Snow can fly off while driving, causing hazards for others.
5. Stay Alert: Winter conditions can create unexpected hazards such as black ice or snowdrifts. Stay vigilant, keep your headlights on, and avoid distractions while driving.
• Driving Without Headlights in Poor Visibility can result in a fine amount of $170 to be issued for not using headlights in low-visibility conditions, including snowstorms and fog.
6. Know When to Stay Home: If the weather is too severe, it may be safer to stay off the roads. Always trust your judgment and avoid unnecessary travel in extreme conditions.
Your safety is important to us! Let’s work together to make sure we’re all prepared and cautious on the roads this winter season.
Stay safe, stay vigilant, and drive responsibly. 🚗❄️
