🔥🌲 FIRE RESTRICTION UPDATE – SOUTHEAST FIRE CENTRE 🌲

The Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department would like residents and visitors to be aware of some important changes to current fire restrictions in the Southeast Fire Centre.

🏕️ CAMPFIRES

Effective at 12:00 noon today, September 1, 2026, the Category 1 campfire prohibition is being lifted.

This means small campfires are once again permitted, provided they meet the requirements for a Category 1 campfire.

⚠️ IMPORTANT FOR GREENWOOD RESIDENTS: Within the City of Greenwood limits, a burn permit from City Hall is required. Please ensure you have a valid permit before burning.

Always have adequate water nearby, keep your fire under control and never leave a campfire unattended.

🏍️ BACKCOUNTRY / OFF-ROAD VEHICLES

The Southeast Fire Centre’s off-road vehicle (ORV) prohibition has also been rescinded, meaning ATVs, UTVs and other off-road vehicles may once again be used where otherwise legally permitted.

⚠️ SOME FIRE RESTRICTIONS REMAIN IN EFFECT

🔥 Category 2 open fires remain PROHIBITED
🔥 Category 3 open fires remain PROHIBITED
🎆 Fireworks remain PROHIBITED
🔥 Burn barrels and burn cages remain PROHIBITED

Please remember that specific wildfire area restrictions or other closures may still be in place around active wildfires. Before heading into the backcountry, always check current conditions and restrictions for the area you plan to visit.

Although conditions have improved, wildfire season is not over. Please continue to use caution with campfires, vehicles and anything that could create a spark.

🔥 WILDFIRE RESPONSE – MOTHERLODE 🔥

Last night, a wildfire was spotted in the Motherlode area above Greenwood, and we want to start by recognizing the group of local residents who saw it, called it in quickly, and took immediate action.

Never underestimate what a few people can accomplish with shovels! Their quick thinking and early response made a tremendous difference. Because this fire was spotted, actioned and reported so early, it was kept small and did not have the opportunity to grow into a much larger threat to our city.

To those residents — thank you. ❤️ Your awareness, quick thinking, hard work and willingness to look out for our community made a real difference last night.

Once notified, the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department responded with 11 firefighters and four apparatus. Our new bush truck was put to work, pumping approximately 500 gallons of water up a steep hill so crews could extinguish the remaining hot spots. We’re happy to say the new pump worked extremely well and proved just how valuable this new piece of equipment will be for our department. 🚒💦

BC Wildfire Service was out this morning checking the fire area.

🔥 Last night also taught us something important about reporting wildfires.

When a wildfire is reported to BC Wildfire Service, that report does not automatically dispatch your local fire department.

So, if you spot a wildfire in or around Greenwood, please report it to BC Wildfire Service:

And please also call 911 so that the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department can be notified and dispatched when appropriate.

Last night was a great example of just how important early detection, quick reporting and community awareness can be.

To the residents who first spotted and reported this fire — thank you for looking out for Greenwood. And thank you to everyone who assisted with the response and to BC Wildfire Service for following up this morning.

🚨 RECREATIONAL OFF-ROAD VEHICLE USE PROHIBITED ON CROWN LAND 🚨

Effective 12:00 p.m. (noon) today, Monday, August 10, 2026, the Province of British Columbia has implemented a temporary prohibition on recreational off-road vehicle (ORV) use on Crown land throughout the Southeast Fire Centre.

🔥 This prohibition includes recreational use of:
• ATVs / quads
• Side-by-sides / UTVs
• Dirt bikes and off-road motorcycles
• Other off-road vehicles

Due to the current hot and dry conditions and elevated wildfire risk, off-road vehicles can unintentionally ignite wildfires through hot exhaust systems, sparks, or contact with dry vegetation.

⚠️ Please note: This is a provincial restriction issued by the Province of British Columbia / BC Wildfire Service and applies to Crown land within the Southeast Fire Centre, including Crown land in our surrounding area.

The prohibition does not apply to private land or national parks, and exemptions are in place for certain activities including emergency response, agriculture, and commercial or industrial operations.

🚙 On-highway vehicles, including trucks and Jeeps, must remain on road surfaces.

We ask everyone to please respect this temporary restriction and help protect our community, surrounding forests, firefighters, and emergency personnel during this period of heightened wildfire risk.

🚒 GVFD RESPONDS TO CARBON MONOXIDE ALARM

Last night, 8 members of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department responded to a carbon monoxide alarm.

Crews arrived and entered the building in full protective gear and wearing SCBA, using a carbon monoxide detector to check the atmosphere. Carbon monoxide was detected inside the building. Crews remained on scene until FortisBC arrived to investigate further.

⚠️ Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and tasteless — you can't see it, smell it or taste it. That’s why working CO alarms are so important.

🏠 Protect your family: • Install CO alarms on every level of your home and near sleeping areas.

• Test your alarms regularly.
• Replace batteries and alarms as recommended by the manufacturer.
• Have fuel-burning appliances and heating systems inspected regularly.

🚨 If your CO alarm sounds, get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911. Do not re-enter until responders tell you it is safe.
A working CO alarm can save lives. Take a few minutes today to make sure yours is working.

🔥 WILDFIRE SEASON IS HERE — ARE YOU READY? 🔥

The hot, dry conditions are creating an increased risk of wildfire throughout our region. With vegetation and forest fuels drying out quickly, a fire can spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

We all have a role to play in preventing wildfires. Please:
🚫 All campfires are currently banned.
🚫 Follow all other current fire restrictions and bans.
🔥 Be extremely careful with anything that could create a spark or flame.
🌲 Take extra care when enjoying the outdoors and working around dry grass and forested areas.

📱 Stay informed! Make sure you are signed up for Voyent Alert! and that your notifications are turned on. Emergency situations can develop quickly, and receiving timely alerts can make all the difference.

🏠 Have an evacuation plan before you need one. Know where you would go, what you would take with you, and how you would safely evacuate with family members, pets and livestock.

If an emergency occurs, rely on official sources for accurate information. During a fast-moving incident, information can change quickly, and not everything shared online is accurate or current.

Last night, several of our members took our new-to-us Bush Truck out for a hands-on training session, becoming familiar with the truck and practicing with its equipment in a real-world setting.

Every new piece of apparatus and equipment requires training, and our members are committed to ensuring they are prepared to use it safely and effectively when our community needs them most.

A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers who continue to give their time to train, learn, and improve their skills. Your commitment helps ensure the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department is always ready to answer the call.

Last night, the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle incident (MVI) involving a rollover just outside of Greenwood near Boundary Creek Road.

Ten members of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department responded alongside BC Emergency Health Services and the RCMP to assist at the scene.

We would like to remind everyone to drive safely, stay alert, and adjust your speed for road and weather conditions.

🔥 CAMPFIRE BAN NOTICE 🔥

With hot, dry conditions continuing across our region, the Southeast Fire Centre has implemented a Category 1 Campfire Prohibition.

⏰ Effective: Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. (noon)

After noon on Thursday, the following are prohibited:
❌ Category 1 Campfires (up to 0.5 m x 0.5 m)
❌ Category 2 & Category 3 Open Fires
❌ Fireworks
❌ Sky Lanterns
❌ Burn Barrels & Burn Cages
❌ Binary Exploding Targets
❌ Air Curtain Burners
❌ Carbonizers
❌ Controlled Air Incinerators
❌ Wood-fired hot tubs, pizza ovens and similar wood-burning devices (unless vented through a building chimney or flue)

⚠️ Please ensure any campfire is completely extinguished before the prohibition takes effect at noon on Thursday.

BC firefighters have already experienced a busy wildfire season, and every preventable fire makes a difference. By respecting this prohibition, you're helping protect our homes, forests, wildlife, and the firefighters who respond when emergencies happen.
