As we celebrate 110 years of the Irish Regiment of Canada. We share one picture a day, until the end of March, that is historically significant.
This one, show Irish regiment soldiers in WW2 posing next to German anti tank defences at a bridge in Otterlo, Netherlands.
On May 1-2, 1945, Major LaPrairie of the Irish Regiment of Canada led a daring night attack on the village of Weiwerd, crucial to the German defenses of Delfzijl. His company surprised the enemy, captured an important bridge intact, and repelled two strong counterattacks. This strategic move cut off the German escape route and set the stage for the Irish Regiment's success. The bridge allowed tanks to pass, breaking the eastern German defenses and leading to the capture of over 1,600 prisoners.
Although no battle honour was awarded for this action, the town of Otterlo gifted the regiment a Bible, which is still used today to swear in new recruits.

Sa compagnie a surpris l'ennemi, capturé intact un pont important et repoussé deux contre-attaques puissantes. Ce mouvement stratégique a coupé l'itinéraire de fuite des Allemands et a ouvert la voie au succès du régiment irlandais. Le pont a permis le passage des chars, brisant les défenses allemandes de l'est et conduisant à la capture de plus de 1 600 prisonniers.
Bien qu'aucun honneur n'ait été décerné pour cette action, la ville d'Otterlo a offert au régiment une bible, qui est encore utilisée aujourd'hui pour faire prêter serment aux nouvelles recrues.
