GRILLING SAFETY

Warmer weather means barbecue season is here - but it’s also one of the busiest times of year for grill fires. A few simple safety steps can help keep your family, home, and guests safe while enjoying the grill.

Keep your grill at least 3 feet away from siding, railings, decks, and anything that can burn
Never leave a grill unattended while cooking
Clean grease and fat buildup regularly
Check propane tanks and connections for leaks before use
Keep kids and pets away from the grilling area
Always keep a water source or fire extinguisher nearby

Most grill fires happen during the spring and summer months , let’s work together to keep backyard BBQs safe and enjoyable for everyone. ☀️🔥

Firefighters from the Howick, North Huron, Huron East, and Goderich Fire Departments came together for another day of hands-on training and skill development as part of weekend #4 of the Huron County Recruit Training Program. Recruits focused on hydrant operations, hose deployment and advancement, portable tank operations, and fire stream applications — all essential skills for effective rural and municipal fireground operations.

These training weekends continue to build teamwork, confidence, and practical experience for the next generation of firefighters across Huron County. Thank you to all of the instructors, departments, and volunteers who help make this program possible!

As temperatures rise, so does the risk 🔥

Items powered by lithium batteries like vapes, phones, scooters, and toys can overheat, leak, or even ignite when left in a hot vehicle. It doesn’t take long for a parked car to reach dangerous temperatures, even on a mild day.

Before you head inside, take a quick look around:
✔️ Bring electronics with you
✔️ Store batteries safely
✔️ Never leave charging devices in your vehicle

A simple habit can prevent a serious fire. Stay safe!

Today the Howick Township Fire Department is conducting our annual pump and ladder certification testing for apparatus.

This important testing helps ensure our pumps, ladders, and firefighting equipment are operating safely and ready to respond when our community needs us most. Annual certification and maintenance are a critical part of keeping our firefighters prepared and our apparatus response-ready.

Residents may notice fire apparatus moving between Howick Township and Wingham throughout the day as testing operations continue and with that being said there is no cause for alarm.

Thank you for your continued support as we work to provide a safe, professional, and reliable fire service!

Thank you to Lisa Thompson, Ontario Minister of Rural Affairs and Member of Provincial Parliament for Huron—Bruce, for joining us to present $16,800 in funding through the Province of Ontario’s Fire Protection Grant program.

We also appreciate the opportunity to discuss the ongoing challenges facing rural fire departments, including firefighter training and certification, recruitment and staffing pressures, infrastructure costs, and apparatus replacement needs.

Support and collaboration at the provincial level are essential to helping rural fire services continue protecting our communities safely and effectively.

The Township of Howick has received funding through the Ontario Fire Protection Grant.

Funding is helping the Howick Township Fire Department purchase new cancer protective equipment, ventilation fans, and gas monitors to reduce exposure to harmful contaminants and support firefighter health and safety.

Thank you to Ontario Minister of Rural Affairs / Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson who joined us to present $16,800.00 in funding through the Province of Ontario’s Fire Protection Grant.

🚒 Firefighter Safety Starts at Your Driveway 🏡

In an emergency, every second counts and one of the simplest ways you can help first responders is by making sure your address is clearly visible.

When firefighters are responding, especially at night or in poor weather, it can be difficult to locate homes without proper signage. A clearly marked address helps us find you faster when it matters most.

Here are a few quick tips:

🔢 Make numbers large and easy to read (at least 3–4 inches high)
💡 Ensure visibility day and night (use reflective or illuminated numbers if possible)
🚪 Place numbers where they can be seen from the road (on your house, mailbox, or driveway entrance)
🌿 Keep them clear of snow, dirt, or overgrown landscaping

Taking a few minutes to check your address visibility could make a life-saving difference for you, your family, and emergency responders.

Help us help you , make your address visible!
