Koyle House

It’s been 165 years since the congregation of the Episcopal Methodist Church* raised the roof at 12 Chapel Street. In 1850, this simple one and a half storey home, of Modern Gothic style, was built for and by Ephraim Lillie Koyle (b. 1813) and his wife, Francis Culp. Reverend Koyle was one of the Church’s first Minister’s, invited to the area by Georgetown founding family member, and

fellow Episcopal Minister, Morris Kennedy. Kennedy sold the original plot of land, a 100' x 200' lot, to Koyle on July 3, 1850 for $1. Over the years, the size of the lot has decreased from being subdivided, with the last being in 1940 when the owner at that time built a second home next door for his parents (10 Chapel St). Along the way, each owner has left their mark both preserving and complimenting the original Gothic style. From adding the enclosed side porch, still with original single pane windows (1900), to installing the tin ceiling in the kitchen to prevent falling plaster caused by vibration from heavy weaving equipment above (1910) and building the 10’ x 15’ back addition with interior basement access (1940). The last 20 years have seen the house completely rewired, plumbed, insulated and recently roofed (2015). Recent interior renovations (2012-present) include: updated kitchen and bathrooms, energy efficient windows and doors, gas fireplace, moldings, trim and paint colours from the national historic series. Current Owners: Jeffry Rottluff and Todd Riedl

*Part of original Episcopal Methodist Church still stands today and has been incorporated into the current St John’s United Church, across the road, at 11 Guelph St.

On February 14, 2017 Koyle House was sold to another family who moved in later in the year. We wish them all the happiness and for starting a new chapter with this piece of Georgetown history.
