A magnetic tape. A record. A film reel. 📼💿🎞️

Behind each object lie fragments of our collective memory, stories, and voices that continue to resonate over time.

On the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, discover the Media Lab at Ādisōke, our future joint facility with Ottawa Public Library (OPL), the result of a unique partnership between LAC, OPL and the City of Ottawa. There, you’ll be able to explore microfilms, microfiches, VHS tapes, cassettes, vinyls, and many other formats.

Scroll through a microfilm, listen to a voice recorded decades ago, or dive into archives to see, hear, and feel history differently.

The Media Lab is among the many spaces at Ādisōke designed to spark curiosity, promote discovery, and forge connections with our collective heritage.

To learn more about this space where you’ll be able touch history with your fingertips, read our article from the Ādisōke Storey-Telling series.

Asian and other diasporic farmers carry deep agrarian traditions and expertise shaped over generations around the world, yet their knowledge and contributions are too often overlooked in Canada. One of those farmers is Sun Shan, a Chinese-Canadian immigrant. 👩🏻‍🌾

When Sun Shan moved to Canada in 2014 with her husband Li Bo and their son Jerry, she never imagined she would become a smallholder farmer and agroecological grower.

However, while living in rural Ontario’s Bruce County, her husband came across an agricultural and culinary map. The couple then spent two months visiting 40 farms, markets, and related establishments to learn about agriculture. Fortunately, a retired farming family, the late Ann Bourgeois and late Eugene Bourgeois from Tiverton, gave the couple access to land and a homestead. There, Sun Shan and her husband began farming while continuing their consulting work in environment.

In 2017, Sun Shan and her family moved to Ottawa, where they launched their farming business at Just Food. Sun Shan continues to grow many vegetables including Asian varieties, to introduce foods rooted in cultures and traditions from around the world. 🥬🌏

Sun Shan and her family practice a Japanese lifestyle called “Half-Farmer, Half-X”. The idea is to grow food for your family and your community while pursuing another passion. For Sun Shan, this means being half farmer, half scholar. She’s currently doing a PhD exploring the connection between immigrants, women, and plants.

Her experience has also shown her how much unseen work happens on farms. “Women do a lot of visible and invisible work. I think a lot of the care work and emotional support come from women, and that is sometimes not acknowledged in our farming community.”

Her advice for women considering a career in agriculture?

“Do not quit your day job to get into agriculture. Go volunteer. Work for a summer at a farm to know what it's like, but also look for the kind of farms that align with your values.”
