GARDEN RIVER FIRST NATION - Suspected Overdoses Prompt Warning From Anishinabek Police Service

The Anishinabek Police Service is issuing a drug alert for Garden River First Nation (GRFN) after reports of two suspected overdoses in recent days, one of which was fatal. Our hearts and thoughts are with the family, friends and loved ones of the young person who lost their life.

While we continue to gather details, we wanted to share the limited information that we have, with the goal of potentially saving lives.

The two incidents below took place on different dates at different locations.

INCIDENT #1

- A number of people reportedly consumed what they believed to be cannabis from a b**g, at a residence
- One person who reportedly consumed from the b**g was subsequently transported to hospital with symptoms consistent with an overdose and has since died
- We do not have any information to indicate that anyone else who consumed from the b**g suffered any overdose symptoms

INCIDENT #2

- A number of people reportedly consumed what they believed to be cannabis from a b**g, at a residence
- A youth who reportedly consumed from the b**g was subsequently transported to hospital with seizures and symptoms consistent with an overdose. They remain in hospital at this time
- We do not have any information to indicate that anyone else who consumed from the b**g suffered any overdose symptoms

These two suspected overdoses took place in the latter half of last week. It is our understanding that the substance consumed in both incidents was purchased at a dispensary in Garden River First Nation.

🔥Reminder🔥

The GRFD recommend any GRFN member burning in the community, to please get a burn permit at the firehall.
Burn permits allow the GRFD to help suggest when and where fires are set, so they reduce the risk of accidental wildfires.

May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ People, also known as Red Dress Day.

The commemoration began with the “REDress Project,” an art installation created by Métis artist Jaime Black in 2010. The project features red dresses hung in public spaces to symbolize the thousands of Indigenous daughters, sisters, mothers, aunties, grandmothers and two-spirit family members and friends who have been victims of violence - abducted assaulted or murdered without adequate investigation or justice. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the need to recognize and address that Indigenous women, girls, two-spirit, and gender-diverse people continue to go missing and are murdered in an unabated and ongoing epidemic of violence.
