Many of you will have noticed that the mowing was not finished on the north end of the island, leaving us with increased fire danger (long, dry grass) and reduced sight lines at some corners. The bad news was that the mower had a serious break-down preventing completion of the job. The good news is that they will be back soon, with an exemption permit for fire danger reduction, that includes fire prevention, fire watch and equipment aboard for dousing a fire should one start from an errant spark. Luckily, much of that may not be needed as the Fire Danger Rating falls with all this rain. Looking forward to the cleaner shoulders.

SNOWFALL WARNING IN EFFECT!

A long period of snowfall with total amounts of 10 to 20 cm is expected. Today and then late tonight to Tuesday night.

Where:
East Vancouver Island, Southern Gulf Islands, Malahat Highway, Greater Victoria.

Additional information:
Environment Canada advises that two rounds of heavy snow are expected for Vancouver Island under the influence of a cold low and arctic outflow winds. The first will occur from this morning to late this afternoon as northwest winds and southeast winds collide over the Strait of Georgia. These bands of snow will have the opportunity to move onshore onto the east side of Vancouver Island from near Comox to Mill Bay. While the snow will become light in Nanaimo, Duncan and the Saanich Peninsula this afternoon, snowsqualls will continue to fall between Qualicum Beach and F***y Bay through the day.

The second round of heavy snow will come in the form of sea-effect snow due to outflow winds crossing the southern Strait of Georgia beginning overnight tonight or Tuesday morning and lasting through to Tuesday night. This second scenario will concentrate the heavy snow between Nanaimo and Victoria, as well as parts of the Southern Gulf Islands.

Snowfall accumulation will be highly variable depending on the length of time a heavy band of snow remains over an area. There is also uncertainty as to the strength of the outflow winds which will have an effect on the total snowfall accumulation for the second round of snow.

Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

Snowfall warnings are issued when significant snowfall is expected.
