Please join us in welcoming Olu Ademoyewa to the Nursing Home Without Walls team! Olu will be with us on Mondays and Tuesdays until mid-December.

Olu is no stranger to York Care Centre. He previously completed a work placement with the Adult Day Program and spent his summer at YCC as an Activity Assistant through the SEED program. We are thrilled to have him back!

Olu is currently completing the Social Service Community Worker Program at NBCC and hopes to stay in Fredericton after graduation to work with older adults in the community.

Originally from Nigeria, Olu moved to Fredericton in 2025. Before coming to Canada, he studied Microbiology at university and continues to run his own business selling fabrics.

When he is not working or studying, you might find Olu playing Scrabble, football (soccer) or cheering on his favourite team, Arsenal. He is also a poetry enthusiast who enjoys both writing his own poetry and the work of Brandon Leake and Amanda Gorman.

We are so happy to have Olu joining the NHWW team at York Care Centre for the next few months. Welcome aboard, Olu!

Emmett (Wellness Coordinator) and one of our lovely clients headed out for a walk together this morning when they stumbled upon a surprise- baby turtles!🐢With traffic nearby, they carefully guided the little turtles out of harms way and snapped a few pictures before continuing on their route.

We never know what adventures a walk together might bring!💙🧡

Sundowning can make late afternoons and evenings really tough for people living with dementia. As the day winds down, confusion or agitation can rise - sometimes because of something that happened earlier, sometimes because a need isn’t being met. Gentle reassurance, distraction, and familiar memories can help bring them back to a calmer place.

Here are 3 tips to help you navigate a loved one experiencing sundowning:

1. Sometimes what seems like ‘sundowning’ could be the person trying to communicate a need. This could be needing the toilet, feeling hungry or being in pain.

2. Uneven indoor lighting and reflective surfaces can sometimes cause confusion by creating disturbing shadows or mirrors. Close the curtains or blinds once it starts to get dark and cover the television with a dust cover, if it’s not being used.

3. If they seem unsettled, think about whether something earlier in the day may have affected them. Try calming them with distraction - like talking about a favourite memory. If they stay agitated, they may have an unmet need.

If you’re supporting someone through this, you’re doing an incredible job. 💙
