On September 11, 2001, firefighters ran toward unimaginable danger while thousands of others were trying to escape.

They climbed smoke-filled stairwells carrying heavy equipment, helped evacuate civilians and continued upward—knowing the risks, but committed to helping those in need. Many were on duty, while others reported from home to assist their fellow firefighters and serve their city.

That day, 343 FDNY firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice. In the years since, many more first responders have lost their lives to illnesses connected to their work at Ground Zero.

Today, the Fredericton Firefighters Association remembers the extraordinary courage, selflessness and sacrifice of the first responders, and honours all those who lost their lives or were forever affected by the devastating attacks of September 11, 2001.

Their actions reflect the commitment shared by firefighters and other first responders everywhere—including our members here in Fredericton—to move toward danger when others need help.

🔥 Structure Fire – Riverside Drive

Yesterday, shortly before 7:00 p.m., your Fredericton firefighters responded to a reported structure fire in the 100 block of Riverside Drive.

While crews were en route, multiple reports were received of smoke coming from the roof and rear of the residence.

Engine 3 and its four man crew arrived first and stretched an attack line through the front of the home and began a primary search while working to locate and control the fire. The Engineer/Operator was also able to quickly establish a water supply from a hydrant located directly in front of the residence.

Rescue 1 and Truck 1 arrived shortly afterward, stretching a second attack line to conduct a primary search of the basement and assist with fire attack operations.

Crews located the fire in the kitchen and encountered high heat and low visibility, with fire extension into the attic. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control while checking for further extension throughout the structure.

Fortunately, nobody was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Over the weekend, members of the Fredericton Firefighters Association were proud to lend a hand with a community trail cleanup in Ward 3.

Our members spend a lot of time serving the community while on duty, but many are also happy to volunteer their time off to help with projects that make Fredericton a better place to live, work, and enjoy.

A big thank you to everyone who came out and helped with the cleanup! 🌲🪵

🚒 DID YOU KNOW? | Which Trucks Respond?

In our last post, we talked about why you may see multiple fire trucks responding to the same emergency.

But what determines which trucks get sent?

The Fredericton Fire Department staffs five frontline apparatus with five crews across our city:

🚒 2 Aerial Trucks
🚒 2 Engines
🛟 1 Rescue

The response changes depending on the type of emergency:

🚑 Medical Calls
The apparatus assigned to that area responds — whether it’s an engine, aerial or rescue. When someone needs help, the closest appropriate crew and apparatus may not look like the fire truck you expected!

🚗 Motor Vehicle Collisions
The apparatus covering that area is dispatched along with Rescue 1 from York Street. Rescue 1 responds to collisions throughout the city because it carries specialized rescue and extrication equipment.

🚨 Fire Alarms
A typical response includes one aerial, one engine and Rescue 1, providing multiple crews and different capabilities should the alarm turn out to be an emergency.

🔥 Structure Fires
This is where you’ll see a much larger response. All five city crews respond, along with the Platoon Captain(incident commander). Each crew has an assignment and works as part of one coordinated operation.

🌊 Water Rescues
These require another specialized response. Rescue 1 responds to help locate and assess the emergency, while the York Street aerial crew transports Marine 1 to the water. On the Northside, the aerial crew brings the Special Operations Unit, and the Platoon Captain also responds.

So the next time you see several Fredericton fire trucks heading in the same direction, remember — they aren’t all bringing the same thing to the call.

Different apparatus carry different equipment, and their crews may have different assignments, but they share one goal: getting the right resources to the right place when they’re needed.

🔥 STRUCTURE FIRE RESPONSE – KING STREET

At approximately 8:47 p.m. last night, all Fredericton fire crews responded to a residential structure fire on King Street.

Upon arrival, Truck 1 and Rescue 1 found smoke and fire coming from the second floor. Crews stretched an attack line to the second floor for an aggressive fire attack, while simultaneously searching and evacuating the remainder of the building.

The fire was quickly extinguished, and the incident was brought under control at 9:24 p.m.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Fire prevention responded to the scene and the cause remains under investigation.

🚒 APPARATUS SPOTLIGHT | What’s Actually Inside a Fire Truck?

You see them responding through the streets of Fredericton — but have you ever wondered what firefighters are carrying inside?

A fire engine is essentially a mobile toolbox built for emergencies.

Depending on the apparatus, our crews carry equipment for:

🔥 Fire suppression
🪜 Ladders and forcible entry
🚗 Vehicle collisions and extrication
🚑 Medical emergencies
🪢 Rescue operations
💧 Water supply
☣️ Hazardous situations
🔦 Search and rescue

And that’s only scratching the surface.

Every compartment has a purpose, and every piece of equipment needs to be checked, maintained and ready to use when the call comes in.

🚒 DID YOU KNOW? | The Call Isn’t Over When We Get Back

When a fire truck returns to the station after an emergency, the work often isn’t finished.

Before that apparatus is ready for the next call, crews may need to:

🧯 Replace and check equipment used on scene
🚒 Clean and return tools to service
💨 Refill air cylinders
🧼 Clean contaminated equipment and protective gear
📋 Complete reports and documentation
🔧 Check the apparatus and make sure everything is ready to go again

And sometimes, there isn’t much time to do it.

The next call can come in at anytime— which is why keeping our trucks, equipment and crews ready is a constant part of every shift.

Respond. Reset. Ready again.

It’s another part of the job the public doesn’t always get to see.
