Congratulations to the 2019 Cohort of UNB / QES Scholars who have just joined our partners at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica. Jenna Curwin and Matt Miller will be completing an internship with the Caribbean Institute for Health Research. Reid Sutherland and Nolan Doak will be with the Centre for Marine Research at Discovery Bay. Thank you to UWI for making this happen for our Science Students

As a QES Scholar, participating in important research is critical but it is also important to get involved in the culture. So while in Jamaica, there is not better way to do this than meet Usain Bolt in person!

Stay tuned for more updates from our QES Scholars in Jamaica. UNB Student Abroad UNB QES 2019 Cohort Queen Elizabeth Scholarships - QES UNB Fredericton Faculty of Science at UNB UNB Student Union University of New Brunswick Ethan O'Connell; Jenna Curwin Reid Sutherland Nolan Doak

Last week we had our first experience in family planning in Malawi. We were able to work with many women to find the right birth control methods for them and their families. This week we were able to take part in family planning talks with both women and men. It was very exciting to be able to have both groups involved in these talks and to work with and learn from them!

We are so thankful for the fourth year Nursing/Midwifery students who have taken us under their wings the past three weeks, with the highs and lows of the labour ward! Nursing in a new place is a lot less daunting when you can problem-solve with an expert in the language, culture, and the manual assessments techniques!

Meet . . . Zoe Louise Jackson

I am a 4th year History Honours Student at the University of New Brunswick. As part of the QES internship, I am working with the Land Management Department at Mzuzu University on a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) project which seeks to map the current cholera epidemic in the Karonga and Nkhata Bay districts of Northern Malawi. I am also collaborating with library officials on campus to create a record-processing centre which would document and preserve the history of Mzuzu University.

Internship goals:

• To expand my GIS skillset and explore new ways in which historical research and GIS can be amalgamated to create visual representations of past or current events
• To research in an international archive that has limited resources and to apply my analysis to relevant historical documents relating to the presence of cholera in Malawi
• To travel to urban and rural communities and participate in data collection that will later be mapped using spatial software
• To gain new perspectives on healthcare and approaches to disease outbreaks in rural villages
• To write an academic paper on past and present cholera epidemics in Malawi and how GIS software can offer innovative and informative analysis through spatial mapping of data
• To increase my professional network and develop long-lasting relationships which will continue to impact me positively even after my internship has concluded
• To be adaptable in changing circumstances and to problem-solve through barriers, such as miscommunication and restricted resources, efficiently and patiently

My “Aha” moment:

Whether it be language barriers, bargaining for cabs or groceries, or travelling in minibuses, this internship has been full of “aha” moments. What intrigued me the most at Mzuzu University was the negotiation in the classroom between the professor and the students regarding the time of their next class, the space in which to have it, and the content – whether it be a quiz or lecture material. This fluid interaction and cooperation between the professor and students allowed for a less regimented framework and instead facilitated a space where together, both students and the lecturer molded the atmosphere of the classroom and the knowledge transfer to take place within it.

I want to thank the QES program for giving me the opportunity to travel to Malawi for the summer. My internship has inspired personal growth and reflection and has given me the chance to experience and appreciate the beauty of Malawian culture. , Queen Elizabeth Scholarships - QES UNB Fredericton - Faculty of Arts UNB Department of History UNB Faculty of Arts Internship Program Jessica Webster UNB Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering Robert William Kingdon Jake Stillwell Prevail Laurent Ian Macdonald
