Envirothon NB

Envirothon NB Envirothon NB is the provincial, bilingual, high/middle school, environmental education competition

Provincial Envirothon teams can register five students and one alternate, with up to two advisors (teachers, parents, or interested volunteers) to guide the team. Resource materials, such as lists of websites and contact people, are furnished to help teams prepare for the provincial competition. Throughout the school year, teams increase their knowledge of five environmental subjects: soils, fores

try, aquatics, wildlife and a fifth topic of environmental concern that changes annually. Workshops and field trips with professionals can be done throughout the year in preparation for the provincial competition. At the Envirothon NB Competition in May, the students' theoretical and field knowledge is examined through outdoor field tests under the supervision of natural resources professionals, such as aquatic and wildlife biologists, foresters, and soil scientists. During these field tests, the students will be asked to do such things as measure the height of trees, describe nutrient cycles in aquatic systems, and identify signs of wildlife. During the competition, the teams are also asked to devise and present a proposal to deal with a serious environmental concern presented to them the day earlier. Integrating all five subject areas, and presenting their proposal in a manner that the public will understand, helps students understand real-world issues involving ecology and the environment.

From fieldwork to forward-thinking solutions – Envirothon NB 2026 Day 2 of Envirothon NB brought teams into the spotlight for the Oral Presentations—where research, teamwork, and real-world problem solving take centre stage.

This year’s current environmental issue: Non-Point Source Pollution.
Teams were challenged to take on the role of land developers in the a watershed with a complex landscape where forests, waterways, wildlife habitat, recreation, and community development all intersect.

Their Challenge:
💧 Plan a 130-hectare residential and recreational development
🌱 Protect wetlands, waterways, and sensitive habitats
🏘️ Balance growth with environmental sustainability
🌊 Reduce non-point source pollution from runoff and land use

After preparing in advance, each team delivered a 20-minute presentation to a panel of five natural resource and environmental education experts—sharing their vision, defending their decisions, and proposing practical solutions.

This is Envirothon—where students move beyond learning facts to applying knowledge in meaningful ways.

🏆 Top 4 Oral Presentation Teams out of 12.

Digging deeper – Envirothon NB 2026

Envirothon NB students went beyond the surface—literally. The Geology/Soils & Land Use Field Test challenged teams to uncover how what’s beneath our feet shapes everything around us.

This station brought real-world science to life:
⛏️ Exploring a soil pit—horizons, drainage, slope & formation
🧱 Determining soil texture & color using field techniques
🪨 Connecting rock types to soil fertility and land use
🌱 Understanding agriculture, forestry, and environmental impacts
🌎 Linking soil health to water quality, ecosystems, and communities

It’s hands-on, critical thinking that shows how soil is the foundation of life—and decision-making.

🦉🐾 Can you read the signs of the wild? – Envirothon NB 2026

At the Envirothon NB field sites, students weren’t just answering questions—they were thinking like wildlife biologists.

The Wildlife Field Test Station challenged teams to interpret the natural world the way experts do:
🐾 Tracking animals by footprints, s**t & signs
🦴 Identifying species from skulls, pelts & mounts
🦅 bird calls, wings & frog calls
🌎 Understanding habitats, biodiversity & food webs
🧠 Applying real conservation thinking—including climate change impacts on species

It’s part detective work, part science, and all hands-on learning.
