Using alcohol, food, work, or screens are some common types of coping mechanisms used to numb or avoid our most difficult feelings like anxiousness, sadness, fear, overwhelm, disappointment, loneliness, shame, etc.

It’s totally human and normal to try to find ways to cope because life is not easy! The problem with a lot of coping strategies we use is that it can create additional problems in our relationship such as the following:

- Difficulty being emotionally available to our partner due to our numbing behaviors
- Our partner feeling like they’re competing with our coping mechanism- preventing them to see our struggles behind the coping strategies – which continues to leave us alone
- Without us realizing it, we are disconnecting ourselves from our emotions and the possibility of getting the support we need from our partner (that we are probably not realizing we need, or can’t accept that we need)

Emotionally Focused Therapy is a great way to start to learn about new healthier coping strategies that will offer you better emotional regulation and creating emotional safety with your partner.

We all have inner-child wounds. Some are more raw and exposed than others, but they all shape the way we see the world and navigate our relationships.

In therapy, we often discover that feelings of unworthiness, abandonment, or rejection didn’t appear out of nowhere. They can usually be traced back to a specific moment or repeated experiences that left a lasting mark. Understanding where those feelings come from doesn’t erase them overnight, but it can help them make sense.

That understanding is often the first step toward healing. When we begin to care for those old wounds instead of unknowingly reopening them, we free up energy to be more present, more connected, and more fully ourselves in the relationships that matter most.

HERE'S THE REPLAY OF A LIVE TALK WE DID LAST MONTH. The actual live video is erased from FB after one month.

Topic: Have you ever found yourself overthinking your partner’s reactions, needing reassurance, or pulling away when things feel too intense?
Attachment wounds and insecurities are some of the most common individual challenges that quietly shape our relationships. These patterns are often not intentional and can feel confusing, especially when they show up most strongly in the relationships that matter the most.

In this Facebook Live, Tina and Michael will explore how attachment wounds develop, how they show up in relationships, and the ways individual therapy can help. This conversation is especially relevant for individuals who notice patterns of insecurity, emotional reactivity, or difficulty trusting closeness and want to better understand how their past experiences may be influencing their current relationship.

As always, they’ll draw from their real-life experiences as therapists and their belief that meaningful relationship change often starts with better understanding yourself first.

In our clinic, we help a lot of individuals recognize the impact of their communication challenge of going automatically to saying: “I’m fine” when their partner approaches them with concern.

This strategy makes sense when we think of how it often comes from a place of fearing ‘rocking the boat’ by being honest, but it also rips away the possibility of your partner understanding you at a different level.

These new understanding is what can create a deeper connection. EVEN IF it might be slightly difficult to hear initially, if love is there, your partner will want to make this better for you. Think about how good that will help you in the process to feel important and validated!

If you say: ‘I’m fine’ because you can’t express in the moment how you are feeling since it’s not clear, take the time to reflect on it and COME BACK to share it with your partner. Trust us when we say that this will mean the world to your partner that you let them in on something that was harder for you.

Individual therapy can help people understand your emotional world better, and feel more confident in how to express that to their partner in a way they will be heard.
