WHAT IS IT WEDNESDAY?

Mystery solved!

Did you guess what this week’s mystery object was?

It’s a folding slate used by school children!

Before paper notebooks were readily available, students often used slates and chalk to practise writing, arithmetic and other lessons. This particular slate is extra interesting because it is ornately decorated and folds closed like a book.

When folded, it helped protect the chalk writing on the slate and made it easier for a student to carry.

📚 A little piece of school history!

Did you guess it? Tell us in the comments — and check back next Wednesday for another mystery from the collection!

🧐 What Is It Wednesday!

Every artifact has a story... but first, can you figure out what this one is?

Study the photo, make your best guess, and let us know what you think it was used for. We'll share the answer—and a little history lesson—on Friday!

Drop your answer in the comments, tag a friend who loves history (or thinks they know everything), and check back on Friday to see if you guessed correctly.
