How do animals avoid wildfires?

Many animals can detect wildfire long before humans do. They may sense smoke, changes in air quality, or even vibrations and sounds associated with fire.

Large mammals such as bison, moose, and bears often move away from approaching fires, while smaller animals may seek refuge in burrows, wetlands, or other sheltered areas. Birds can fly to safer locations, and some species are well adapted to living in landscapes shaped by periodic wildfire.

While wildfires can be challenging for wildlife, fire is also a natural part of many ecosystems and helps create diverse habitats that support a wide variety of plants and animals.

Please be advised, this post is intended to support wildfire information and help visitors be more educated about wildfire overall. 📢 Visitor Centre Closure Notice

The Wood Buffalo National Park Visitor Centre will be closed from September 14 to 18 as Parks Canada team members support the annual land-based camp for Grade 7 and 8 students from PWK High School.

This valuable program provides students with opportunities to learn, connect with the land, and experience Wood Buffalo National Park firsthand.

Regular Visitor Centre hours will resume on Monday, September 21.

Winter Road Open House 🚗

Parks Canada invites community members to attend a Winter Road Open House to learn more about future planning, upcoming work, and considerations for winter road operations between Fort Smith and Fort Chipewyan.

Staff will be available to share information, answer questions, and hear your thoughts on the winter road and how updates and information are communicated to users and communities.

Out in the remote wetlands of the Northwest Territories, every step contributes to the long-term conservation efforts to protect one of North America’s rarest bird species.

Facing the brink of extinction in the 1940s, the whooping crane population fell to just 21 birds. Through sustained recovery efforts over decades, the population has steadily rebounded. As of 2025, the Aransas–Wood Buffalo population stands at 557 birds.

Parks Canada, the Wilder Institute and Environment and Climate Change Canada are leading monitoring efforts in Wood Buffalo National Park. This work provides researcher with a better understanding for population size, breeding success rates, nesting behaviours, habitat use, and effectiveness of conservation efforts, as these birds continue their road to recovery.

There have been no new fires in Wood Buffalo National Park since the last update.

The current fire danger level for Wood Buffalo National Park is: LOW

Location: This fire is located near Needle Lake approximately 10 km west of Highway 5 and 143 km west of Fort Smith.
Status: This fire is estimated to be 207 ha in size and is now classified as under control.
Details: Following successful suppression efforts by fire crews, supported by bucketing helicopters, this wildfire is now under control.

These fires remain under their previous classifications with no change in size, exhibiting low to no fire behaviour and showing no observed growth.

Temperatures will warm slightly into the mid to high teens, with moderate humidity levels and a chance of scattered showers.

With summer winding down, the Wood Buffalo National Park Visitor Centre will be moving to its shoulder season schedule.

Starting September 5, the Visitor Centre will be open:

🕘 Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
🚫 Weekends and statutory holidays: Closed
