A safe lake adventure starts before you leave shore.
Take the following steps to keep every lake adventure a safe one:
🌊Wear certified life jackets or personal flotation devices (PFD) when on water.
🌊Stay close to shore and use pleasure crafts at own risk. Elk Island National Park does not have lifeguards on duty.
🌊Complete a pre-departure checklist.
🌊Share a trip plan with family or friends.
🌊Check the weather before you leave shore and prepare for the unexpected – strong winds can quickly turn a lake from serene to dangerous.
🌊The lakes can be cold, even in the summer and hypothermia can set in quickly. Watch for symptoms, including shivering, confusion, slurred speech, drowsiness and low energy.
