A safe lake adventure starts before you leave shore.

Take the following steps to keep every lake adventure a safe one:

🌊Wear certified life jackets or personal flotation devices (PFD) when on water.
🌊Stay close to shore and use pleasure crafts at own risk. Elk Island National Park does not have lifeguards on duty.
🌊Complete a pre-departure checklist.
🌊Share a trip plan with family or friends.
🌊Check the weather before you leave shore and prepare for the unexpected – strong winds can quickly turn a lake from serene to dangerous.
🌊The lakes can be cold, even in the summer and hypothermia can set in quickly. Watch for symptoms, including shivering, confusion, slurred speech, drowsiness and low energy.

Small Steps, Big Impact 👣

Something as simple as mud on your boots or equipment can carry invasive plant seeds into new areas 😮

That’s why has boot brush stations at trailheads, ready for you to use.
👉 Brush off your boots
👉 Check your clothing and gear for dirt or plant material
👉 Give your pet a quick once-over too

These small actions help limit how invasive plants spread and help protect the areas you love 🌱

Someone is eyeing your lunch…
Wild animals only need seconds to get a taste of your food and learn unsafe behaviour.

Help keep wildlife wild: keep your snacks close, your garbage secure, and your scented items out of reach.

Because trust us… they’re definitely watching. 🐿️😉

✨ Looking to catch the stars or northern lights? ✨

The Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve offers many amazing spots to enjoy the night sky. Elk Island National Park can get very busy when aurora forecasts are strong. For a more relaxed (and equally beautiful!) experience, consider exploring other nearby locations:

🌌 Cooking Lake–Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area (designated staging areas)
🌌 Miquelon Lake Provincial Park

To help keep visitors safe and reduce congestion, temporary closures may be put in place during peak nights, and there’s no parking at the Astotin Day Use area from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

By planning ahead and choosing less crowded spots, you’ll help ensure a safe, enjoyable night under the stars for everyone. 💫

Invasive plants may look pretty, but looks can be deceiving. 👀
They can quickly harm ecosystems by crowding out native plants, disrupting habitats, and are even toxic to some wildlife 🌿
Exploring ? Take a moment to protect the trails that you love 💚

👉Spending a few minutes removing mud, plants, and other debris from your boots, clothes, pets, and vehicle goes a long way in helping keep non-native plants from spreading.💪

At Elk Island National Park, boot brush stations at trailheads make it easy to help reduce spreading invasive plant seeds. 👉 Take a moment to brush off mud and debris before and after your hike.

Happy National Running Day! 🏃‍♀️

🐻 Trail running is a great way to connect with nature. But if you encounter wildlife, remember:
❌ Don’t run from bears.

Running from bears could trigger a predatory response and increase the risk of a dangerous encounter. Instead:
✔️ Stay calm
✔️ Make yourself look big
✔️ Back away slowly
✔️ Consider carrying bear spray and know how to use it

Trail safety tips for runners:
🔊 Make noise as you go
👥 Travel as a group
🌿 Stay on official trails
🌞 Run during daylight hours
🦌 Give wildlife plenty of space
🎧 Stay aware of your surroundings. Leave the headphones at home
⚠️ Slow down around blind corners

Keep your distance, stay alert, and happy running from all of us at Parks Canada! 🐻🏃
