🚨 SCAM WARNING – Fort McMurray 🚨

We’re seeing a dangerous scam targeting local trades and small contractors here in Fort McMurray. It’s slick—and it’s happening right now.

Here’s how it works:
- You get a text about a job at a new home under construction.
- The scammer asks you to check out the site and offers to send a certified cheque as a deposit.
- You’re told to use part of that money to pay a “previous contractor” and pick up the keys.
- The cheque looks legit.
- They walk you through how to deposit it using your mobile app.
- The cheque bounces a few days later and you’re out the money.

They’ll say they’re out of town and the work is urgent!

Yes, this scam is real. Someone just tried it on us.

These scams are clever, but we’re smarter together.

💬 Talk to your crew. Trust your gut. Don’t move money unless you’re 100% sure who’s on the other end.

📢 Share this post to protect others in Fort McMurray.
Scammers count on silence, we’re not giving it to them.

Stay sharp. Stay local.

🚨 Community Notice: Be Cautious with Door-to-Door Asphalt Sales 🚧

We’ve received several messages this week about a company currently going door-to-door in Fort McMurray, offering “leftover” asphalt at what seems like a good deal. While the quoted price may sound competitive, it’s important to be aware:

👉 Homeowners are agreeing to a small asphalt pad (~2000 ft²), only to come home and find their entire driveway paved—followed by an invoice 3–4x higher than discussed.

Before you agree to any work, protect yourself by asking the right questions:
✔️ Where is the asphalt coming from?
✔️ Do you have a valid Fort McMurray business license?
✔️ Can you provide proof of WCB coverage and liability insurance?
✔️ Are there mix designs or engineering test results available for the asphalt?

Whether you choose to work with us or another reputable contractor, we urge you to do your research. Ask questions, check references, and most importantly—support local businesses that are committed to quality and transparency.

Let’s keep our community strong and informed! 💪

Last week, Keith and Lana participated in meetings with Alberta Deputy Ministers in a roundtable discussion coordinated by the Alberta Construction Association on key topics for the construction industry, including contracts and procurement, workforce development and sustainable and predictable infrastructure funding. We felt it was a very constructive meeting where stakeholders across associations shared their views and built connections with senior leaders in government.

Thank you to the Deputy Ministers for giving their time and willingness to have an open discussion.
