These page is solely meant for enlightening Kenyans about the jobs and lifestyle in fortmcmurray. Are you going to school in north America? Do you want quick extra cash to cover your tuition or pocket money? Well fort McMurray is the right place to work for summer jobs, just working like 5 months alone for the summer you guaranteed 10,000$ to 20000$ depending on the job you will get. Now remember
most jobs here pay from 20$ n up but that is if you have your drivers license. Most companies require that you have a drivers license (in Alberta terms they call it "full class five ) google out Alberta drivers license ) however they recognize drivers license from other provinces /states across north America but call any Alberta Registry before you move and they will tell you how your drivers license will be rated according to their standards. Students who want to switch careers to oil and gas? I know most students in north America are doing nursing , it's not that they like it but because nursing in north America is considered lucrative , but hey their is nothing that beats oil in terms of earnings, the biggest money makers in north America are the oil and gas workers, think about it, it takes you 4 years of college for you to start making 30-40$ an hour where's in fort McMurray all you need is high school diploma and you will be making that or more by just doing general labour(depending on which company you get a job with or if you lucky and get into one of the unions ( especially local 92 http://www.local92.com/ pays 32$ per hour for its labour guys plus you get paid double time for working weekends and time and half for working Fridays, do your math and you looking at taking home 1500$ every week, do you still wanna be a nurse? Good lucky buddy. So if labors make that much weekly just for working in the oil field, how about those who have degrees in any oil and gas related course, eg petroleum engineering, power engineering, environmental engineering, etc.? In a nut shell these guys make like 3000$ a week(that's net). Do you still wanna be a nurse in north America ? If that's your call , well and good but if it's just a job to get you quick money, then think twice, it's not that late to switch , apply to Nait or Sait just google any Canadian college that offers oil and gas course , most are diplomas that take two years but just at completion of first year you still gonna be making lots of money just doing summer internship at the oil field. Kenyans back home yearning to move to north America ? if your brothers and sisters have the opportunity to come study in the USA or Canada , advice them to chose Canada , the Canadian economy is booming more than USA , theirs more money you can make in Canada than the USA , the states is just the pride but no money . Let them apply to the colleges/universities in Alberta to study for oil and gas , the demand for skilled workers in fort McMurray Alberta is overwhelming . Plus given the fact that we just discovered oil back home and no African university offers oil and gas courses , they will be hot cakes in Africa once they finish their studies from here( remember most of those oil companies doing exploration back home are Canadian based). Lifestyle? Rumors has it that the lifestyle in fort McMurray is whack? Not real the whack thing about these place is the rent , just like any oil town , the expenses are high, but what do you expect ,
One bedroom goes apartment goes for 1500$ , 2 bedroom apartment 21000$, so here is the trick, nobody is here to live a luxurious lifestyle , you here to make your cash and bounce unless you land the big gigs and buy your own house as most people do after working here for a while. Best way to go around it is by getting friends and you take one bedroom and share , let's say you 4 friends, thus each is paying 350$, now that solves the equation. If you making lets say 5000$ a month and you paying 350$ for rent and all utilities, that's a good deal. At least you saving some money compared to working 3 jobs in Toronto or Texas for 9-12$ an hour and you still can't afford your bills. I have been their before, breaking my back in the warehouse or working in nursing homes, and by the way oil field jobs are the easiest , you get paid 12 hours but out of the 12hrs sometimes you only working for 4 hrs the rest you just lazying around, nothing compared to those back breaking warehouse jobs or nursing home jobs. Entertainment ? well just like any other town , theirs decent entertainment in first McMurray to relieve your work stress. Theirs night clubs if you wanna party so are strip clubs for adults who wanna play and numerous recreational parks. But if you wanna go out of town the next biggest town is 4 hrs drive , Edmonton , most people usually drive to Edmonton on they'd days off. Moving to fort McMurray ? If you don't have family here or friends to accommodate you(which is hard)
Best bet is to come and stay in the shelter(they will house you until you get a job, free room free food). This's shelters are being funded by the oil companies in their dire need for more workers , meanings living conditions are very decent unlike other shelters any where else.
