Half-Masting of Flags in Honour of Jim Caughlin

The flags at all Town of Fort Macleod facilities will be flown at half-mast in honour of Jim Caughlin, former Fire Chief, who passed away on September 2, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Chief Caughlin served on the Fort Macleod Fire Department for 30 years, from April 1, 1974, to April 30, 2004. He was promoted to Captain on September 26, 1985, and led the department as Chief from January 1, 1994, until his retirement on April 30, 2004. His dedication, bravery and leadership have left an indelible mark on our community.

Council and staff extend their condolences to his family, friends, and former colleagues. As a mark of respect and mourning, the flags will remain at half-mast until next week. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones in this difficult time.

Due to cooler wet weather the fire ban has been lifted and is moving to a Fire Restriction for the Town of Fort Macleod. Approved backyard fire pits and outdoor fireplaces that conform to the Town of Fort Macleod Fire Bylaw 1867, contained in a metal or non-combustible container for heating or cooking, are permitted. Please do so responsibly and with extreme caution.

FIRE BAN IN EFFECT - TOWN OF FORT MACLEOD
JULY 19, 2024, AT 10:00 AM

Due to the persistent heat and dry conditions, a FIRE BAN is now in effect for the Town of Fort Macleod with respect to all open fires within its municipal boundaries.

UNDER THE FIRE BAN (NOT PERMITTED):
• All open burning is prohibited (campfires, fire pits, burn barrels, charcoal briquette BBQs, debris burning, etc.).
• All active fire/burn permits are cancelled.
• No new fire permits will be issued.
• Fireworks and exploding targets are always prohibited.

EXCEPTIONS (PERMITTED):
• Propane or natural gas appliances (e.g., barbecues, stoves, heaters, portable fire pits) are allowed if CSA-approved or UL-certified.
• Please use these appliances responsibly and cautiously. Ensure your BBQ is regularly cleaned to prevent grease buildup. Operate at a safe distance from buildings and flammable materials.
Burning during a FIRE BAN is illegal, and fines or cost of response could apply.

🚨A Fire Restriction🚨is now in effect for the MD of Willow Creek due to the hot and drying conditions!

Under the Fire Restriction all existing Fire Permits are cancelled, and no new Fire Permits will be issued.

Burn Barrels, incinerators, backyard fire pits and recreational campfires (including those in campgrounds located within the MD of Willow Creek) that meet our Bylaw requirements are still allowed, but the MD is asking that you use extreme caution when burning.

Please remember to revisit any previous burn sites to check for hotspots. Douse any remaining hotspots with water and stir up the ashes.

The MD may move into a Fire Ban with little to no notice so please check the MD of Willow Creek website https://loom.ly/p4xZffQ or the Alberta Fire Bans website https://loom.ly/9ihGO5I for the most up-to-date information.
