International Women’s Day is a reminder to us all to pause and reflect on the strong women in our lives and our communities who have made such a difference.
Geraldine Kavanagh & Patricia O’Brien are two such women. While sadly they are no longer with us on earth, they left a lifetime of memories and lessons for family and loved ones.
While serving on the Ferryland Tourism Committee for many years with these women, I learned so much from them. They gave their time, their energy and shared a passion to make our community better every day.
As I think of organizations they gave their all to, I fear I will forget some - Southern Shore Folk Arts, Holy Trinity Restoration Foundation, Girl Guides, Kinettes, our church choir and so many others.
Geraldine often was the first one to organize an event, a community clean up, etc. Patricia would be right there to always lend a hand & keep us motivated with her witty comments. There was not a concert in Ferryland that did not have Patrica’s humour front and center - from emceeing, to acting, to the funny quips if she caught your eye from the stage, she had us all in stitches.
Her line at the end of the show to tell us it was time to go home - 'Time for this to be over now, and Mother, let’s get up over the turn for a cup of tea and toast’.
Geraldine’s laugh would be the loudest, as she was probably the one selling tickets at the door or the 50/50 table.
I had the privilege of knowing they were both rooting for me from day one at the lighthouse. Although Geraldine said to me often, ‘You knows you ruined my walk to the lighthouse. I used to come out here for exercise and now I comes out here and eats.'
All of their volunteer work, was in addition to their work lives, and raising wonderful families. Families who they were so proud of and their children grew in the sunshine of their love.
I smile thinking of Patricia and Geraldine today. Let us all learn from their example.
