One of our summer staff picked up 17 deflated helium balloons along only a portion of the coastal alvar trail. These balloon, especially with ribbon attached, are hazardous to wildlife such as loons, ducks and herons. We need to take better care of our environment and prevent plastic waste such as these balloons

The wood lily, or Lilium philadelphicum is still blooming in Misery Bay! This bright-orange flower can be found within Eastern Canada, where it is the provincial flower of Saskatchewan. This species is very slow-growing, taking 5-7 years to bloom from seed. They are important for our pollinators and can live for decades unless picked.

Linnaea borealis is commonly known as twinflower, due to the nature of the plant. The flowers are dark to pale pink, and grow in pairs on a Y-shaped stem. They are commonly found along coniferous forest edges, but can also be found in open meadows and near water bodies. The twinflowers are still blooming along our trails, come see them while they’re still in season!

Some of the many berry species you can see at Misery Bay Provincial Park are bearberry (slide 1) and blueberry (slide 2). Bearberry is a small evergreen with glossy leaves, only reaching 15 - 30 cm tall. Blueberry plants are deciduous and grow up to 60 cm tall. Both species have white and pale pink bell-shaped flowers that grow in clusters in the spring, and both are important for wildlife within the park

Campanula rotundifolia, know commonly as harebell or bluebell, is a species with purple bell-shaped flowers that droop from the weight on their slim stems. They can have a single flower or grow together in clusters and reach up to 40 cm tall. They will be blooming on the alvar until September, make sure to come check them out!

Prickly wild rose is blooming on the alvar today 🌸 This species grows up to 1 meter in height and has dark pink to light cream and white coloured flowers. Their flowers then turn into rose hips that are beneficial for wildlife. Come enjoy the beautiful weather at Misery Bay Provincial Park.

Castilleja coccinea, known commonly as paintbrush, blooms in a variety of colours! This unique species helps to prevent erosion and has the ability to sequester nutrients from neighbouring plants, making it hemiparasitic. Come see if you can spot any in the park!
