Caregiver Check-In

Let's say the things we don't always say out loud.

✨ Finish the sentence:
"Right now, I need more _____ and less _____."

Maybe you need more rest and less pressure.
Maybe you need more support and less judgment.
Maybe you need more laughter and less worry.

Whatever your answer is, it matters.

Share yours in the comments. You never know who might read your words and realize they're not alone.

A GLASS HALF FULL

As families that include loved ones with intellectual disabilities, we know for sure that “one size fits all” isn’t our reality. As family caregivers, we could be dealing with any number of challenges that make our child a “designer original.”

There are many different developmental milestones and potential complications. For many, the term “autism” is part of their uniqueness. There are huge variables in autism, as we know.
This morning, while researching, I came upon a very creative project taking place in New York City. Chef Franklin Becker is the owner of a fine dining restaurant who has created the initiative “Chefs on the Spectrum,” giving those with autism culinary jobs.

Franklin became interested in this opportunity because he had a personal perspective. His son lives with autism. As a board member of Autism Speaks, he is invested in adding those with autism to his fine dining kitchen team. A recent The New York Times article, “For People With Autism, Can Restaurant Kitchens Be a Haven?” highlighted his success. Check it out here:

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/05/dining/autism-chefs-restaurants.html

His proactive, inclusive approach spurred others on their board to become actively involved in the board initiative “TEAM 20.” This has become a funding source that promotes inclusiveness.
I highly recommend that you access Autism Speaks. Here you will get further details on “Chefs on the Spectrum” and “TEAM 20.” I have highlighted these resources in case you want to explore potential opportunities for your family member. Windsor/Essex County has many restaurants. Let Ensemble know if this resource has given you ideas you’d like to share. Dream what’s possible!

So often it seems our lives are presented with roadblocks. Do we accept the roadblock as a “NO!” that leads to an “I CAN’T”? Or do we take the roadblock as a challenge that says, “Just watch me! I CAN!”

American TV host Craig Melvin has just launched a YouTube program called “GLASS HALF FULL.” Check out his page here. Each week he will explore how “setbacks become breakthroughs.” No doom and gloom!

When life is difficult, it presents us with opportunities. What opportunities have you been given as a result of parenting a child with an intellectual disability? I hope you’re not searching for the answer with a “glass half empty” attitude. Keep thinking and remember: “Your glass is half full!”

We’re waiting for you to share your stories with your Ensemble family of voices at Ensemble Understands.

Until next week,

ENSEMBLE SUMMER SERIES — WEEK 3 💛🌞

Summer reminds us that slowing down is sometimes exactly what our families need.

During the school year, life can feel like constant survival mode:
appointments, therapies, medications, routines, paperwork, caregiving, exhaustion.

And then summer arrives…

Not always easier .. but different.

Maybe this season is not about doing more. Maybe it’s about breathing more.

💛 sleeping in a little
💛 sitting outside after sunset
💛 saying no without guilt
💛 letting dishes wait
💛 choosing peace over pressure
💛 finding tiny moments of joy in the middle of caregiving life

To every caregiver carrying a heavy load: You do not have to create a “perfect summer” to create meaningful memories.

Sometimes the moments our loved ones remember most are simply when we were calm enough to enjoy them too. ☀️

With love,

I think as parents and caregivers we can all relate to this post.

Did anyone else feel like they got thrown into the deep end with no bloody instructions?

Disability parenting is not just parenting with a few extra appointments.

It’s advocacy.
It’s grief.
It’s fear.
It’s constant decisions.
It’s learning medical, therapy, school and NDIS language while still trying to be a present mum.

And most of us were never prepared for the emotional weight of it.

So if you’re not always calm…
If you snap sometimes…
If you feel like you’re winging it…
If you wonder whether you’re doing enough…

Please hear me.
You are learning a life no one taught you how to live.
You don’t need to be perfect.
You need support, repair and a nervous system that isn’t expected to carry all of this alone.

Follow me for real, honest support for special needs mums.

Comment FREE and I’ll send you some free resources to help you start calming your nervous system in the middle of the chaos.

Dear Families, Caregivers & Support Workers 💛

As we head into another weekend, we know every family’s version of “rest” can look very different. For some, weekends are filled with appointments, routines, medications, lifting, feeding, behaviours, sleepless nights, and constant caregiving. For others, the weekend may finally bring a small exhale because trusted supports are walking through the front door to help carry some of the load.

To the incredible support workers entering our homes this weekend .. thank you. Thank you for stepping into our worlds with compassion, patience, humour, and understanding. Sometimes your presence gives families the ability to grocery shop, attend another child’s activity, enjoy a coffee in peace, reconnect with a spouse, or simply take a breath without listening with one ear constantly “on.”

And to the families welcoming supports into their homes .. we know the vulnerability and trust that takes. Allowing others into the deeply personal parts of our lives is not easy, but community care matters. None of us were meant to do this alone.

This weekend, may families feel supported, may caregivers find moments of rest without guilt, and may support workers know how deeply valued they truly are.

You matter more than you know.

Socializing is Positive

EXTRA! EXTRA! Ensemble's grant proposal for unpaid caregivers has been successful. The Ontario Caregivers Association in conjunction with the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services has awarded funds to Ensemble.

These funds will be directed toward offering FREE recreational/social activities to family members who provide unpaid caregiving to their adult children with intellectual disabilities who are over the age of 18.

These activities will be offered over the coming months. Each event will have a limited number of spaces. In order to attend these events, participants must pre-register. Only one family member can participate in each offering.

Details about registration will accompany each activity. Early registration is a must, as there will be a limited number of spaces. Be sure to check our page weekly.

These recreational activities will allow you to escape your daily routines, discover new activities, and connect with others who share similar life experiences.

Recognizing and rewarding the contributions unpaid family caregivers make to others’ daily lives guarantees continued family engagement. By strengthening family connections, we assist family caregivers in remaining resilient.

We look forward to announcing our first caregiver get-together.

Happy Spring!

Dear Families and Caregivers 💛

One thing that often goes unseen in the caregiving world is this:

We cannot do this alone.

Behind so many families caring for children and adults with disabilities are the incredible people who step into our homes and our lives with compassion, patience, and consistency. PSWs, nurses, therapists, respite workers, educational assistants, support staff, transportation workers, family members, friends .. the people who show up matter more than words can ever express.

For many families, these supports are not a luxury. They are the difference between surviving and completely burning out. They allow us to work, sleep, attend appointments, care for our marriages, our other children, and sometimes simply breathe for a moment.

And beyond the practical help, something beautiful happens when our loved ones are genuinely cared for by others. Our children build trust, friendships, confidence, joy, and connection with the people supporting them. Those relationships become part of the heartbeat of our families.

To the people who support our loved ones with kindness and dignity:

Please know that families carry deep gratitude for you. You may never fully realize the impact you have, but your presence changes lives every single day.

And to fellow caregivers .. if you have a support person who has become part of your village, today is a beautiful day to tell them how much they mean to your family. 💛
