Hooray for .

This morning began with one quiet cup of coffee in the conservatory—the final room in our ten-year restoration.

Today, a Destination Ontario film crew will arrive at Rossland Gardens to capture footage for its rural tourism campaigns. The timing feels particularly meaningful: wider recognition is beginning to follow years of quiet, sustained work, even as the making of this place continues.

Since 2016, Ross and I have restored Amherst Island’s oldest farmstead, settled c.1790, and developed its eight acres as an artist-founded cultural destination, bringing together a gallery of Canadian fine craft, curated botanical gardens and natural trails within the historic property.

We are deeply grateful to and for believing in and championing what we have created here.

Before the cameras arrive, one quiet moment in the golden light to take in how far we have come.

Ten years. The last room.

In 2016, Ross and I began restoring this house one room at a time. The work has unfolded around us through every season, alongside the gardens, the gallery, our studios and the ordinary demands of living in an old place.

This is the final room still waiting to be completed.

It will become the plant conservatory: a light-filled working room where I will grow the seedlings that eventually move into the gardens at Rossland Gardens. Trays of annuals, vegetables, herbs and tender plants will begin here, protected from the cold until the season is ready for them outdoors. I have imagined this room for years—not as a decorative addition, but as a practical and essential part of how the house and gardens function together.

For now, it remains visibly in transition. The walls are unfinished, the framing is exposed and the floor is still waiting. Beside me, panels of stained glass catch the sun even before the room is complete. I love the honesty of this stage: the old fabric of the house, the new work and the evidence of every decision not yet concealed behind finished surfaces.

A conservatory is, in its own way, a room organized around light. That makes it feel entirely right as the final room in this ten-year restoration: a place where glass, growth and the changing seasons will meet.

There is still work ahead. Soon this room will hold worktables, pots, seed trays and the first green shoots of each garden year.

The restoration will never truly be finished—old houses and gardens do not work that way—but when this room is complete, the house will finally be whole.

Rossland Gardens is our life’s work. This is the final room—and another beginning.

Hooray for Friday Flowers: This week’s pic — *Persicaria orientalis*, Kiss-Me-Over-the-Garden-Gate.

A favourite of Thomas Jefferson, Kiss-Me-Over-the-Garden-Gate was once a familiar presence in North American gardens. Its great height, abundant foliage and long, pendulous clusters of rose-pink flowers made it particularly suited to gates, fences and the backs of borders.

It gradually fell out of favour with nurseries because it does not transplant well. In the garden, however, it self-seeds generously and returns wherever conditions suit it.

Our plants began with seeds given to us by Sally Bowen of in 2021. They have returned each year since, choosing their own places around the potager. This season, they are doing precisely what their wonderful old name suggests: growing over the garden gate.

We are open today, 11:00-4:30.

Three living ferments from the Rossland Gardens harvest.

Fermentation is one of the oldest forms of preservation. Rather than relying on vinegar, naturally occurring cultures slowly transform fresh vegetables, creating their characteristic acidity, depth and complexity. Because these ferments are unpasteurized, they retain the live cultures produced during fermentation and must be kept refrigerated.

Our dill and garlic pickles are crisp, savoury and fragrant with garden dill. The fermented purple beans are exceptionally slender French-style beans, harvested young and preserved with garlic and spice. Fermented honey garlic is the rarest of the three: whole cloves mellowed slowly in raw honey until they become tender, sweet, savoury and richly aromatic.

Every jar was prepared by hand in very small quantities from what the garden provided. There are only a few jars of each, and once this harvest is gone, there will be no more this season.

Available shortly for preorder and pickup from the Gallery at Rossland Gardens.

Hooray for Friday Flowers

Garlic chives have made themselves thoroughly at home at Rossland Gardens.

Native to Asia and long cultivated in kitchen gardens, Allium tuberosum has naturalized across the old farmstead, appearing freely through the grass and along the garden edges. By late summer, its flat green leaves send up slender stems topped by loose white stars.

We did not plant this particular colony. It chose its own place beside the pond, where it now grows around a metal heron we bought in Bala about ten years ago, just as our life at Rossland Gardens was beginning.

The flowers are alive with bees and other pollinators—a quiet late-season feast at a time when every bloom matters.

Not native, as we had assumed. Simply very much at home.

FROM THE GARDEN: GARLIC-CHIVE PANCAKES

In Korean cooking, garlic chives are traditionally used to make buchujeon: crisp, savoury pancakes served with a dipping sauce.

* 2 packed cups garlic-chive leaves, cut into 2-inch lengths
* ¾ cup flour
* ¼ cup rice flour or cornstarch
* 1 egg
* Approximately ¾ cup cold water
* ½ teaspoon salt

Whisk the flour, rice flour, egg, water and salt into a thin batter. Fold in the garlic chives and fry as one large pancake or several small ones until crisp and golden on both sides.

Serve with a dipping sauce of soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil and a little chili. A few properly identified garlic-chive flowers may also be scattered through the batter.
