𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 💻✨

Transitioning from full-time studies to a professional corporate setting can feel like a step outside your comfort zone, but at the City of Edmonton, student hires are empowered to thrive from day one.

We sat down with 𝐊𝐢𝐦 𝐕𝐨, a Co-op Student in our Open City and Technology Branch, to get her candid take on team trust, enterprise tech projects, and navigating campus to career.

𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐚 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞?
A: I work with incoming technology requests from business areas across the City. After gathering requirements, I coordinated directly with our cybersecurity and application teams to find the best tech solutions.

𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲?
A: How supportive and friendly everyone is! I was trusted with real responsibilities from day one. My team actively collaborated with me on projects with a high level of trust and encouragement, so I never felt like "just a student".

𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?
A: I was part of the project team implementing ServiceNow, the new IT service management system for City employees, helping out with change management to ensure a smooth transition.

𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦?
A: Cross-functional communication and stakeholder management. In school, you usually work with the same peers, but here I collaborated across multiple departments, coordinating meetings and software requests to keep projects moving in a large organization.

𝐐: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭?
A: They didn't just throw me into the deep end! They started me with manageable tasks like project tracking and gradually gave me more independence. Plus, with student mixers and events, there are so many people to chat with and learn about their experience.

𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠?
A: Definitely apply and don't wait until you feel 100% ready! There is never a perfect time, and the City provides such a supportive environment that you'll have plenty of help along the way.
