A great way to build your resume! Check out this FREE peacemaking circle training for youth.

In two days of experiential-based training, participants will learn that peacemaking circles can be used for many reasons; not only as a forum for conflict resolution, but as an alternative communication method that allows people to deal with extremely painful and difficult issues, manage their own healing process, make agreements that promote moving forward in a good way, celebrate successes, build community and make decisions, which can be applied in a variety of contexts and settings.

We're proud to announce the Oskayak Police Academy officially has 22 shiny new alumni! 2018 was another great year, full of exciting new experiences, wonderful learning opportunities and lots of happy memory making moments. Thanks to everyone who participated and who helped to make the past two weeks so much fun 😀😀😀

Summer camps galore! Experience Métis traditions at the first ever Métis Nation of Alberta Youth Culture Camp July 15-21.

Learn important cultural teachings including hide tanning, beading, and finger weaving.
Campers will also learn how to live off the land, participate in a canoe expedition, and sleep in traditional Métis trapper’s tents.

The event is free to attend. Participants must be Métis citizens between 13 and 17 years old. Very limited space available.

We are excited to announce that registration for the 2018 Oskayak Police Academy is officially open!

Ever wanted to learn how to dust for fingerprints? Make your own traditional drum? Try on riot squad gear? Go medicine picking with an Elder? Get a behind the scenes tour of a police station? Apply to the Oskayak Police Academy and you could have a chance to do all these things and more this summer!

The Oskayak Police Academy is free to attend and runs from July 3-13 this year. You may even be eligible to earn 3 high-school credits!

Hey friends! Still haven't made plans for Spring Break? Check out this free City of Edmonton youth leadership opportunity:

RISING YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

This is a two day free leadership training for youth ages 13- 17 that have an interest in leading recreation programs and games for children and their peers.

The program will run Monday, March 26, 2018 from 1pm - 4 pm and Tuesday, March 27, 2018 from 1 pm - 4 pm in Meadows Recreation Centre and Wednesday, March 28, 2018 from 1pm - 4 pm and Thursday, March 29, 2018 from 1 pm - 4 pm in Clareview Recreation Centre.

During the two days participants will develop better communication skills, build confidence in leading games and activities for their community. The group will explore employment and gain interview skills and resume building. Each participant will receive our leadership guide booklet and a certificate of completion once they complete the two day program.

Oskayak Police Academy

The Oskayak (meaning “Youth” in the Cree language) Police Academy program has been developed in cooperation and support with community partners representing several urban Indigenous organizations including: the Edmonton Police Service, Metis Child & Family Services Society, Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society, Edmonton Public Schools and Edmonton Catholic Schools. We are all working together to create a safe environment where police members can learn more about working with Indigenous communities, and where youth can learn about policing.

This two week program is geared towards self-identified Indigenous youth between the ages of 14 - 18yrs. The Oskayak Police Academy (OPA) will be working with Metro Continuing Education to offer participants the opportunity to earn up to 3 credits toward their high school education.

The OPA uses 3 simple principles: (1) Engage; (2) Inspire; and (3) Inform, to educate Indigenous youth about policing practices, Indigenous cultural and police protocols, and crime prevention initiatives.
