Moving to Alberta? You might be wondering how utilities work here.

Here are a few things to know ⬇️
🔷 The main utilities in Alberta are electricity, natural gas, and water
🔷 Alberta has a competitive market for electricity and natural gas, which means you can choose your retailer
🔷 There are also default options if you don’t sign with a competitive retailer
🔷 Prices can fluctuate based on supply, demand, and other market factors

Setting up utilities for the first time can come with many questions. The UCA has information and resources to help you understand your options and what to expect.

The UCA has a tool to help Albertans compare energy retailers and find the option that works for them.

Whether you need energy for your home, small business, or farm, the Cost Comparison Tool (CCT) shows a list of retailers, their rates, plan options, and an estimate of your monthly bill.
It’s a simple way to see what’s available and helps you make an informed decision when choosing a retailer.

Use the CCT to find the best one for you: https://ucahelps.alberta.ca/cost-comparison-tool/

When choosing an energy retailer, here are a few questions to consider when comparing your options 👇

What rate is being offered?

Am I locked into a plan? If so, for how long?

Are there exit fees?

What administrative fees apply?

Are there any sign-up bonuses or incentives?

These are some of the factors that can impact your final choice. Ultimately, you decide which retailer and plan you’re most comfortable with. The UCA can help you understand what to look for and how to compare your options.

Transmission? Distribution? These charges appear on every utility bill, but what do they mean? ⬇️

If you have ever wondered about these charges, you’re not alone! Simply put, transmission and distribution charges are the costs of getting electricity or natural gas to your home.

🔄️Transmission: The cost of moving electricity or natural gas over long distances from where it is produced to your local area.
🏡Distribution: The cost of delivering electricity or natural gas within your community, such as within the city or town, and directly to your home.
