Caregivers Alberta

Caregivers Alberta Caregivers Alberta is a nonprofit organization that focuses on the well-being of family & friend caregivers by providing supports and programs.

Many caregivers face serious issues that affect their physical, mental emotional, social and financial well-being. It is as vital to care for the caregiver as it is to care for the recipient. We are here to help you take care of you , not make you a "better" caregiver.

There is no off switch.

For family caregivers, the day doesn’t end when the lights go out.

Night-time means listening for movement, checking in, staying alert to sounds that might signal something is wrong. Sleep comes in fragments—if it comes at all.

Then morning arrives, and everything continues again without time to fully recover or rest.

This isn’t a role anyone applied for. It’s unpaid care, taken on out of love, responsibility, and necessity.

And over time, it builds quietly—not in one breaking moment, but in days that never fully pause.

💛 Family caregivers carry everything. Support them before exhaustion becomes crisis for countless families everywhere.

Young Caregivers represent a group of family caregivers who frequently
go unnoticed - both by professionals and their own families. For many

Young Caregivers, assisting a family member is simply a part of life,
however, these roles can lead to stress, anxiety, and social isolation.

Through the Young Caregivers Day campaign, we’re asking educators,
healthcare providers, and professionals across Canada to recognize and
support the young caregivers who are often overlooked so they can thrive.

Last month, we hosted our 2nd Ambassador Retreat — and it was a huge success! 💙
This year’s retreat brought together current and prospective Ambassadors from across Alberta for a meaningful day of learning, connection, collaboration, and conversation centred around supporting family caregivers.

Throughout the day, attendees learned more about Caregivers Alberta’s programs and services, explored ways to engage community members, and discussed how to build local, in-person peer support groups in their own communities. Along the way, new friendships were formed, ideas were exchanged, and attendees inspired one another through their passion, creativity, and lived experiences.

We were also grateful to have both staff and board members join throughout the retreat, helping foster a strong sense of collaboration and shared purpose as we continue working together to increase awareness of caregiving across Alberta.

The room was filled with energy, compassion, and thoughtful discussion, and we left feeling encouraged and excited for what lies ahead. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this year’s retreat such a meaningful experience. We are already looking forward to next year! ✨

They don’t think of themselves as caregivers. They call themselves daughters, sons, spouses, parents.

But across Alberta, 1 in 4 people are providing unpaid care to someone they love—often in their own home, quietly, and without training or support.

It usually starts small. A ride to an appointment. A prescription picked up. A meal prepared.

Then it grows—until one day, it becomes what life revolves around. Cooking meals. Booking appointments. Managing medications. Sitting together through uncertain days.

Many don’t ask for help. Some don’t even recognize the role they’re in.

Family caregivers carry so much—often while balancing work, family, and their own wellbeing. 💛

Caregivers Alberta is a “hidden gem.” Its programs have “saved my life.”

Powerful statements from Liesel Spicer, who’s a caregiver for her 91-year-old father.

Liesel Spicer’s caregiving journey began in 2019, supporting both of her parents. Over time, the demands grew - especially after the loss of her mother and her father’s transition into long-term care.

Balancing work, family, and caregiving led to burnout. “I’ve learned I need to look after myself too.”

Everything changed when she found Caregivers Alberta.

Through programs like a journaling group, she found something powerful: connection. “We laugh together, we cry together - we share our burdens.”

Liesel’s message is simple: you’re not alone. There’s a community here for you. “It's a treasure beyond worth.”

We are so proud to welcome Caregivers Alberta as our newest Care Opinion subscriber!

Caregivers Alberta has been supporting unpaid caregivers across the province for over 25 years, offering programs, resources, and education to help people navigate the realities of caring for a loved one.

For many Albertans, healthcare does not happen alone. It happens alongside caregivers who support loved ones who coordinate appointments, advocate, provide everyday care and emotional support, much of this happening behind the scenes. Caregivers bring a unique perspective on how care is experienced, and their voices matter.

You don’t always call it caregiving.

You call it driving hours to appointments. Checking in between shifts. Managing medications. Coordinating care from a distance. Making sure nothing falls through the cracks when services are limited close to home.

If this sounds familiar, you may already be a caregiver.

Caregivers Alberta is looking for family and friend caregivers from rural, remote, and northern communities across Alberta to join our Caregiver Advisory Panel.

All meetings are virtual to help reduce barriers to participation, no matter where you live in Alberta.

We want to hear from people who understand the realities of caregiving outside major centres—long travel times, limited local supports, and balancing care in smaller communities.

Your experience can help shape programs, research, public policy, and caregiver supports across Alberta.
