At The Hallway Café, growth can look like many things. ⁠

It can look like a young person building confidence in a busy café setting. ⁠

It can look like learning new skills, setting goals, showing up for a shift, or discovering a new sense of possibility. ⁠

Through this program, we have seen young people grow, develop their dreams, and begin imagining what comes next. Some have even found a passion for cooking and started exploring a future in the culinary arts. ⁠

The Hallway Café provides youth with employment readiness training, education access, navigation supports, and hands-on experience in a live café environment. ⁠
⁠

Moose was made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Morris Family Foundation and works alongside his handler, Tracey, a social worker at WEAC. His role may look a little different from the rest of the team, but the impact he has is easy to see.⁠

From offering comfort, connection, and the ability to feel safe to communicate with our team, Moose makes everyone he engages with feel at ease. women at WEAC light up when they see him, and those moments of joy and connection can mean a lot. 💚

Young Chefs is back.⁠
⁠
Hosted in partner schools through e4c’s School Nutrition Program, Young Chefs is an after-school food literacy program where children learn practical kitchen skills in a supportive, hands-on environment.⁠
⁠
Over six weeks, students practise skills like safe knife handling, food preparation, and working together in the kitchen. Each session ends with the group making and sharing a dish together, creating space for confidence, connection, and community.⁠

We’re excited to see this program relaunch and continue helping students build knowledge, independence, and a positive relationship with food.⁠

After school, creative spaces can help students build confidence, develop friendships, and feel a stronger sense of belonging.⁠

Through visual art, drama, dance, and music, students have the chance to try new things, share their ideas, and discover different ways to express themselves.⁠

That’s why e4c’s ArtStart program offers free after-school arts classes that bring students together through creativity and connection.⁠

A few months later, we’re still thinking about the food shared at the Marion Wheaton Centre naming ceremony.⁠

Everything was so thoughtfully prepared and truly delicious. The Hallway Café staff helped cater the gathering, Chef Holly Holt created dishes rooted in her culture, knowledge, and connection to community, and Double Greeting Wonton House generously supported the event.⁠
⁠
Together, the food reflected a beautiful cultural fusion of Chinese and Indigenous traditions, honouring the neighbourhood, the people gathered, and the meaning behind the day.⁠
⁠
Food was such a meaningful part of the ceremony. It brought people together, carried story and care, and helped create a warm space for everyone who gathered.⁠

We’re grateful to everyone who helped prepare, serve, sponsor, and share in such a special afternoon.⁠

Today is National Nonprofit Day.

For us, this day is about recognizing the people behind community care.

Nonprofit work is built through relationships. It happens through staff showing up with compassion, volunteers giving their time, donors choosing to support meaningful work, partners stepping forward, and community members trusting us to walk alongside them.

At e4c, we are grateful for every person who helps make this work possible.

From food enhancement and early learning to housing support, employment readiness, financial empowerment, and community connection, our programs are rooted in dignity, belonging, and care.
