Right at Home Housing Society

Right at Home Housing Society With over 20 buildings, we provide safe, affordable, adequate and sustainable housing for over 500 individuals and families with low income. VALUES

A. B. C. D. E.

Long-term, supportive, safe, and affordable housing is necessary for people to begin to cope with other aspects of their lives. E.g.., improving their health and/or income, and improving their ability to participate more fully in the community. We have over 20 housing developments throughout the inner city neighborhoods in Edmonton. This is "a place to call home" for individuals and families - app

roximately 500 people in over 300 units of decent, affordable housing. People have a right to stable, accessible, secure, affordable housing. There is a need for supportive management when providing affordable housing in the inner city. The Right at Home Housing Society respects and responds to the cultural diversity of the communities it serves. The well-being of individuals and the "building of the community" within our buildings are best served through being inclusive, and not labelling tenants, and by providing The Right at Home Housing Society's Supportive Management Model. The Edmonton Inner City Housing Society fosters opportunities for participation, companionship, and support among tenants and the community. F. The Right at Home Housing Society participates in and contributes to, strengthening the local community. G. People deserve to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their life situation.

Last week, we were joined by the Kinsmen Club of Edmonton at our St. Paul's Legacy site, for which the Kinsmen Club contributed towards the asbestos abatement and flooring replacement within the church building that is unique to this housing development.

The shared spaces in the converted community building can be used to bring together both residents in our 11 affordable housing units at this location, and other neighbours in a range of activities within the King Edward Park Community. Thank you to Kinsmen Club for empowering us to further our progress for this space!

Congratulations to Christian on his recent achievement, winning the ARLA Edmonton award for Support Staff of the Year! Christian has been our dedicated Tenant and Housing Manager Support for over four years. He performs a variety of tasks to improve the delivery of our services, and ensures tenants have the opportunity to remain housed with Right at Home. Christian's role is the key piece for conflict resolution in our affordable housing, and he has vastly improved tenant relationships with the landlord, especially concerning vulnerable persons who are facing trauma, economic, social, cultural and systemic barriers in our community.

Christian is one of the most kind and caring people to work in housing. His passion for people and his ability to connect with anyone make him invaluable to our organization. Christian is a pillar of the community and endlessly invests his energy in supporting others wellbeing.

On April 10, 2025, we celebrated a new beginning with old friends in the King Edward Park Community as we hosted our grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for our St. Paul's Legacy Project. Former church members, neighbours, and new residents shared smiles and memories of the space that once hosted new German immigrants. Today, the St. Paul Lutheran Church has passed on its historically giving nature to new young families and individuals, including immigrants in need of affordable housing.

The St. Paul's Legacy Project supports 11 households experiencing low-income, allowing deeply affordable housing to exist in the well-established neighbourhood. As well, the church space has been converted into a welcoming community space for neighbours to gather, preserving some of its history for those who hold meaningful memories between the walls.

We have so many people to thank for bringing this project to fruition. We are grateful to the St. Paul Lutheran Church congregation, who donated the property for us to build the project. We would also like to thank YourAlberta (Government of Alberta), City of Edmonton - Local Government and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) for their support.

From our open house, we'd love to thank our speakers: Ashley Salvador, Anne Stevenson, Brandon Lunty MLA Leduc-Beaumont, Marlin Schmidt, Executive Director Marisa Redmond and Beth who spoke beautifully about the impact this housing has on our tenants.

We are also incredibly grateful for the support and advocacy given to us by Leading Housing (Kevin Cooper) and Janis Irwin

An extended gratitude goes to all those involved in various phases of the project development since 2019:
Construction Manager: Dan Swanson (Krawford Construction)
The team at DIALOG: Tai Ziola, Youssef Degwy, Carolyn Keeley, Riley Quintin, Steven Oosterhof, Eric Irion, Janice Mills, and Alex Grams, PEng
Community Engagement and Planning: Chelsey Jersak with Situate
Electrical Engineer: David Yee
Mechanical Engineer: Stuart Fix
Landscape Architect: Stefan Luchinger (Design North Landscape Architecture Inc.)
Civil Engineering: Slavek Strzelczyk
Right at Home Director of Operations: Jessica Hoffman

This project is an incredible testament to how successful affordable housing can be developed when multiple people and organizations come together and believe that good things are possible. Following the footsteps of our late Executive Director, Cam McDonald, we continue to say Yes, In My Back Yard.

Before we enter a quiet season of reflection, we want to share Jennifer's story to exemplify why affordable housing is so important in our city during this time of giving.

Jennifer’s journey to Right at Home was not an easy one. Jennifer left her childhood home in Paul Band at 18 years old, but when her mother needed support, she moved back home at the age of 54. Jennifer was disheartened to see her childhood home in disrepair, and struggled to get support to rebuild. This resulted in a tough period for Jennifer, moving from one substandard living situation to another for almost one year.

Today, Jennifer has found a home at our Montrose property with her daughter and five grandchildren. We are so proud to be a positive moment in Jennifer's story.

In our 2023 winter newsletter, we asked donors to support our latest housing project in the neighbourhood of Montrose. Jennifer's journey is one example of what the power of donations can do. Please consider supporting our cause today: https://rightathomehousing.com/donate/

The chilly weather and snow has made us extra grateful for our groundskeeping team! Right at Home Housing Society offers a casual labour program in which tenants are able to gain employment and supplementary income to support their housing journey.

One such tenant, Beth, spoke to us for our recent winter newsletter about the benefits of having an affordable home and taking pride in joining our groundskeeping crew as she contributes to maintaining Right at Home's properties.
